We currently have a £70Bn deficit in trading with the EU, I would be more than happy to move the whole trading relationship towards North America and I'm pretty sure that Trump would be happy with a £70Bn a year surplus.

This is perhaps the most naive thing you've ever posted here. The Yank has never, whoever the President was, been interested in fair trading deals and they would look to get the biggest surplus they possibly could - which would be far more than £70 billion. They'd insist on full and free access to our economy, businesses, markets and population whilst protecting their own from the laughably small level of competition we would be able to provide.

Outside the EU, our only hope of a bright economic future is to sort out trade deals so that trade with and via us is easier, cheaper and more efficient than trade between states - which given the massive complexity of TTIP and TPP is probably a direction down which international trade will move, once it becomes obvious how the dispute resolution model is basically poison.

That's a massive assumption though and stands up to little scrutiny.

How much of the 65 year olds knowledge is still relevant in 2017? That'll depend on the segment they work in and what has changed over the years. The 45 year old with 20 years less experience may have worked in numerous different environments and gained a much broader breadth of knowledge than the older guy who might have spent most of his career in one organisation. So it's not a fair assumption at all, as there's numerous different variables...

As for the Commonwealth, rather ironic that it's being held up as the great opportunity - when it was the drop off in our trade with the Commonwealth that prompted us to join the Common Market in the first place!

What are we going to sell into the Commonwealth that we don't already and why exactly???

Not at all. I'm doing a straight comparison between myself and this Lawyer. I have seen most the changes over the years, political, legal, economic, environmental, demographic and technological, the lawyer has seen very little I haven't. I have worked in telecommunication, health, public services, power, rail, defence, satellite communications, aircraft, shipbuilding and submarines and closely with government departments both U.K. and Foreign. I have worked throughout the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, China, Japan, India and South Africa, with my managerial and technical staff coming from each of those countries. I have almost certainly forgotten more than this young lad knows, so I get a teeny bit upset when he refers to my considered vote as 'stupid'...

Your view of the commonwealth is incorrect. It was a result of joining the EEC that ensured a drop of of trade with NZ, Australia etc.....

What we will sell is what opportunity brings, technology moves on, cars are changing, manufacturing process is king, hell, as a result of building our new aircraft carriers we have even regained a technological advantage in modular shipbuilding. We have the skills and talent to be whatever we want. The only thing holding us back is a lack of confidence by people who have known nothing other than the safety net of the EU........

Maybe, maybe not. The thing that sticks in the craw of many "younger folk" though Pete, is that your generation voted to go in, and, by and large, your generation voted to leave.

Source. My lad. And his mates.

Your post about age and experience was a generalisation, so thanks for posting your CV but it wasn't really necessary, as your premise is still nads Pete.

You're wrong about the decrease in commonwealth trade not being a key factor in the U.K seeking to become part of the common market as well.

The rest is just meaningless waffle, what are we going to sell them that we don't already?

I try to answer your post, you just dismiss it, what is the point.......

Nice CV.

However your excessive use of periods at the end of each of your paragraphs just screams 15 year old.

Joining the EU was basically stabbing these countries in the back. They moved on and developed better trading relationships with countries nearer to them (what a crazy idea) and now they are just going to come running back for old times sake?

There might be trade deals (driven by UK desperation to make it look like there is some kind of plan), but what good is a free trade deal with New Zealand for example? Their demand for UK goods and services is next to nothing compared to our total exports and their advanced farming industry will destroy many UK farmers (those left who aren't already doomed when they lose their EU subsidies).

Ditching the EU for some far flung, tiny places with no interest and no longer any reliance on the UK may be some weird empirical dream for old people but it's mind numbingly stupid, no matter how much old man river and The Express, Daily mail etc paint such a trade deal as a victory.

I have a feeling the leave vote on the OP here may have crept up a little. But 64.3% of GOT posters who have expressed a preference still want to stay in. That is the sort of vote on which governments ought to act. 52% cannot be seen as an overwhelming vote for the kind of exit we are heading towards
