Works for Norway.

And I don't recall any vote on leaving the EEA.

If Brexit, at least let it be pointless, rather than suicidal.

Norway is a country on 5M people who live the good life selling oil and gas. They are no longer a real trading nation.Being part of EFTA and EEA makes perfect sense for them. The UK however, with 65M people and with little by way of either landmass nor natural resources is a trading nation, but one which can exist very nicely outside of the EU and its desire to become the EUSSR.

Your leaving the EEA comment is just like the 'I don't recall any vote to leave the single market or the Customs area', it's one and the same.

Brexit is not pointless, when the remoaners actually get behind the rest of the country in making our exit successful, preferably without denigrating or stabbing the country in the back in the process, we will be well set up to develop and shape the future of the UK and it's people as we see fit and vote for.......

Except the academic and commercial powers that make the country successful largely wanted to remain. Those who voted to leave were generally from smaller towns that contribute little to the economic success of the country. If those folk wanted to contribute to the success of the UK I don't know what's taking them so long.

Not gonna lie Bruce, and as a mate, that sounds/reads terribly condescending to anyone outside the M25.

Sorry mate, I'm just winding Pete up, but it does have an element of truth though in that of the biggest economies in the UK, and the best universities, the only place that voted to leave was Birmingham. Everyone else voted to remain, including the capitals of each of the four nations of the UK.

If the main wealth generators in the country voted against what we're about to do, it strikes me as a bit odd to then say those people aren't pulling their weight and holding Britain back.

My own survey of folk prior to voting Stay suggested to me that a lot who voted Leave had already enjoyed the fruits of their labour over the last 40 years or so, and were quite happy to pull the ladder up now. So, I kind of agree, and with @jal123 , just thought the post was well, a bit off.

But if it keeps Pete fuming, carry on!

Of course, it wasn't tactful and without poking Pete such arguments should be made much more diplomatically, and I do very much consider places like Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Glasgow when saying the above rather than just London, but London alone contributes almost as much in terms of GDP as the other cities mentioned above combined, and it voted overwhelmingly to remain.

Now of course, you could argue the odds about the London-centricity of the UK, but the fact remains that even if you play down the importance of London, the economy will be powered by other cities like those mentioned above. Of course we need to improve the chances of smaller towns, unquestionably, but for the economy to thrive upon our departure, you need people who by and large disagree with what you're doing to up their game even further, which strikes me as a bit funny.

Isn't it easier to just paste Verhofstadt tweets:

E.g:

Would they be 'punishing' us if we hadn't started this whole charade?

I doubt it

'We' (and I'm loathe to include myself with these lot) deserve everything they dish out.

It's the narrative that has emerged though isn't it? Brexit will lead us on a path to glory, and any locals that disagree are remoaners holding us back, and if the EU don't gild our lilies then they are punishing us and therefore justifying our departure. It's akin to sticking ones head in the sand whilst lashing your feet at anyone that tries to drag you out.

Their punishing ways is why we should leave them.

The comments on his tweets are always funny, especially in this particular case, since he is stating something that everybody already knew but still people are angry.

It's like they've chosen his account to create a perpetual battleground between Brexiters and remainers.

This is not true Bruce, no matter how much you want to believe it. Academics just want constant revenue and the ability to earn a good living, they have never had to go out into the big bad world and fight or work for anything. Commercial powers prefer an easy life but more and more are beginning to appreciate the opportunities that will come their way. They have been locked into a way of believing in the EU for so long that they have never seen what the rest of the planet has to offer, their eyes are being opened.

These 'smaller towns' that you speak of still represent the majority of the people of the UK, your comment is quite distasteful because they provide you with not only the overall majority of taxation but the very necessary resources for you to stay alive. You are presenting a very small minded London centric view of the world.

As a separate point, as we remind ourselves of the sacrifices of our families in wars gone by, how would our cities even exist without the endeavours and sacrifices of the millions of 'non city' folk who fought for you.....

This narrative you speak of, will not be of milk and honey. It will be hard, difficult and perhaps painful. Those of us who are perhaps older have no problem with this. It seems the younger elements haven't the stomach for the challenge. We can do without the EU, we don't need gilded lilies, we don't need an easy life. If you and the younger generation need the EU because you are afraid of standing on your own feet then in twenty years just vote to go back in, it's simple. However I would place a bet right now that having spent twenty years outside of the EU you would not do it.......

Coming from someone who is comfortably retired this is kinda irritating. It won't be you who deals with the hardships and pains. It'll be those of us already busting our balls to try and raise families and barely managing as it is. I haven't got the stomach for seeing myself or friends of mine losing our jobs and homes. Soz abar me.
