You nearly had me until.....'City of London was a relative backwater prior to Britain joining the EU.' hahahahaha.........
Does seem rather strong, but let's not throw the baby out with the proverbial. London wasn't financially anywhere like it is now before we made it (rightly or wrongly) a National focus.
"...three-quarters of the country is poorer than the EU-15 average", however...

But poorer in what way. Money, absolute salary, benefits, healthcare, crime, quality of life. We can't be doing too bad as lots of people seem to want to come here.......I quite like the UK....

Quite right to question, but i'm sure they will be fairly standard industrial metrics. I just thought it quite interesting.

They come here because

A) they already speak some English
B) the Daily Mail has portrayed an image to the rest of the world that Britain is the world's easiest benefit cheating country

Yeah the language, almost everybody in Europe speaks English. That and it's quite easy to get a job in the UK. In Germany, and Belgium and such it's more difficult to get a job as a foreigner since it's all quite protected (apprenticeships etc...)- unless you want to work in the exploitation segment mainly in construction. E.g: In Belgium if you want to be a toilet lady in Brussels, you have to speak French and Dutch.

I'm sure the kind of person who would travel a bloody long way to start a new life would do so so they could sit on their backside and claim benefits (even though that's actually not possible to do).

Too long 1hr 21mins.
Sir Humphrey Appleby said that the EU was just a vehicle to keep the French Farmers quite and rehabilitate The Germans back into the Human Race.
Basically what he was saying is that the EU is Germany's plot to dominate Europe in a peaceful way since efforts to do it militarily have failed. He said Germany being dominant in Europe is inevitable because of its size. He talked a lot about Russia and how there is no effort to integrate Russia into the EU as it is too big and would threaten Germany's dominance. And he said Ukraine is the most strategically important territory in Europe, which is why the EU provoked the war back in 2014, which has all been blamed on Russia.

Re the UK's position in the EU, he said it was probably a mistake to join in the 1st place, and the UK has always been at its most prosperous as a nation independent of other groups, but he thinks that since we have been in it so long, it could be a mistake to leave because he doubts we are equipped as a nation to go it alone in modern times, especially being led by such an incompetent group as the Tories who are only interested in furthering their own power.

Worth finding an hour to listen IMO. You might not agree with it all but it is quite interesting.

Still too long.
I still prefer this version.
Hacker: Europe is a community of nations, dedicated towards one goal.
Sir Humphrey: Oh, ha ha ha.
Hacker: May we share the joke, Humphrey?
Sir Humphrey: Oh Minister, let's look at this objectively. It is a game played for national interests, and always was. Why do you suppose we went into it?
Hacker: To strengthen the brotherhood of free Western nations.
Sir Humphrey: Oh really. We went in to screw the French by splitting them off from the Germans.
Hacker: So why did the French go into it, then?
Sir Humphrey: Well, to protect their inefficient farmers from commercial competition
Hacker: That certainly doesn't apply to the Germans.
Sir Humphrey: No, no. They went in to cleanse themselves of genocide and apply for readmission to the human race.
Hacker: I never heard such appalling cynicism! At least the small nations didn't go into it for selfish reasons.
Sir Humphrey: Oh really? Luxembourg is in it for the perks; the capital of the EEC, all that foreign money pouring in.

Who do I call if I want to speak to Europe?
Henry Kissinger (allegedly)
