Oh please. They voted 99/1 to remain in the EU and you're complaining about their rights not being respected?

Like the rest of the UK they voted in a U.K. referendum. Like Scotland they had previously voted to remain part of the UK. You are very clear on your support for foreign nationals living in the U.K. being treated fairly during this process, perhaps it is too much to ask that you support British citizens based in Gibraltar in the same way.....

Which begs the question quite why the agriculture industry has had the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme from 1948, doesn't it? Indeed, as one study from the University of Exeter shows, this has been going on for centuries.

https://blogs.exeter.ac.uk/exeterbl...british-fruit-and-veg-before-migrant-workers/

"In response to labour shortages following World War II, the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme (SAWS) was introduced in 1945, allowing foreign nationals to temporarily reside in the UK in order to harvest fruit and vegetables. The bulk of SAWS workers were Eastern European or from the former Soviet Union."

The scheme existed to allow the industry to 'trade with the world' in a talent sense, but was scrapped after it was felt that plenty of talent was available from across the EU. Indeed, as the article above highlights, previous attempts to get these jobs filled by natives have failed:

Which has gone from a SAWS quota of just under 5,000 in 1994 to over 20,000 today. So during a period of increased mechanisation we have seen a fourfold increase in overseas labour.........

What a massive own goal by the EU. Allowing Spain to veto whatever deal is agreed because of their lust for Gibralter is insane. It makes the next 2 years of talks meaningless, 2 years of wasted effort and delay because Spain will use it's veto whether it's a Hard or Soft Brexit. We should just put a halt to it right now and get on with sorting out immigration rules, visas etc and agree trade deals with other countries and companies so that come Brexit day we can hit the ground running.

Gibralter has not been ruled by Spain for over 300 years and their people love it that way. It is not a British Colony; it is a British Overseas Territory, a world of difference. Any British government which handed it back to Spain without a Yes vote by the people who live there would be committing political suicide.

But why just Gibralter? How about if Russia demanded the return of oil-rich Alaska, France the return of Quebec and Louisiana, the Dutch the return of New York (formerly New Amsterdam) and the UK getting back Calais from the French?

The people of Gibraltar want to be British, that's all you had to say, no need for the daft analogies. Have a referendum there a couple of years after Brexit and see what the want then.

They have shot themselves in the foot. Besides the political ramifications of uniting all U.K. Political parties, it is also illegal in International Law, and the EU will look as though they are assuming UN level responsibilities. The UK could just go to the ICJ and sort this once and for all but Spain would refuse because they know what the outcome would be. We should immediately file for the 12 mile sea and 200 mile economic benefits via current Law and tell the EU all bets are off until this illegal approach is rescinded.......of course I'm still waiting for any remainers, such as Bruce, to actually come down on the side of Gibraltar.....

£500m to on a new passport project. Turning them from burgundy to blue. How many frontline emergency staff could be employed for that? It's important to keep the swivelled eyed loons happy though I suppose isn't it, Theresa? You contemptuous cretin.

I suppose it was justified by someone saying 'brexit is brexit' at some point....or 'breakfast' come to think of it...

Crikey, I know the EU are being awkward, but our Government is so out of its depth it's embarassing.

The budget showed how out of their depth they really are. Backtracking immediately with higher NI contributions for self employed. They obviously couldn't think things through. Same with leaving the EU, they are shooting from the hip and hoping for the best. Embarrassing is being too kind to them.

I think you're right, although my personal feelings were tempered somewhat by the swear-filter and potential harm to children and animals.

The 'defence' aspect last week's also noteworthy. The Cabinet meeting where it was decided that it was a strong suit to play was obviously leaked, and the EU countered before notification by saying it couldn't form part of the discussion. Rather than change tack slightly and state that ALL contributions and liabilities should be considered, they just ran with the original script ffs.

This morning I read an interview with Aaron Banks (the man who bought brexit) in which he essentially admitted that Brexit was paid for using Russian money.
