Just throwing this out there for discussion: in light of Greece's continuing woes and distinct likelihood of dropping out of the Euro, would having two currencies work? Like an East Euro and a West Euro. Seems to me that the economies across Europe are so disparate that one currency just shouldn't work. Perhaps by broadly grouping the countries by the nature of their economies it could help both groups to strive and compete with each other.

I might be talking jive, in which case ignore me.

It's also important to note that a sudden downturn on the number of immigrants coming here and contributing to our public finances and workforce would be disastrous for our nations economy and long-term prosperity.

The fact of the matter is that the right-wing media has made immigration an obsession, an obsession based on feeling - and not fact. If you look at academic literature, you'll find that immigration brought a substantial amount of positives over perceived negatives.

Immigrants to the UK tend to be classified, on average, as "highly-skilled". I also believe that research has been conducted which found that the percentage of individuals migrating to the UK have a higher chance of having college+ education far exceeds our own native population.

unfortunately the EU should have realised this would be a problem, people will blame freedom of movement for their ills as will the press...this is what essentially led us to leaving the EU

im starting to think that freedom of movement should have been managed better to prevent these views forming in the 1st place

They export more to us than them so they cut their noses off to spite their faces???
A deal will be worked out our Army / Navy help them out for free everything will be on the table as I have pointed out it's down to them the Remainers can scream , and shout about what they want at the end of the day it's down to negotiations that will be voted on by Parliment at the end of it all!

No-one is screaming for a start off Joey.

Just pointing out that the idea that we'll end up with a free trade deal with all of the benefits of the customs union and the single market, without paying a tariff or accepting free movement, is the stuff of fantasy mate.

Yes, as a collective they export more in fiscal terms to us than we do them, but it'll need all 27 to agree, and some export next to nothing to us. So why would they vote to give us a free trade deal that would leave us in a better position outside the EU than when we were in it? Seriously why does anyone think that's even remotely likely to happen?

If they put high tarrifs on us and we return the complementbuwe would be 3 billion better off - a deal, will be done they have more to lose than us we churn then trade elsewhere also!
Freedom from a Polictical union - our laws not theirs!

ddint realise it was so simple!

This just isn't going to happen Pete.

There's no way all 27 EU countries will ratify a free trade deal with the UK, that basically gives us the major benefit of membership without adhering to the 4 pillars, or paying for the privilege.

It just can't happen from the EU perspective, as it'd set a precedent that would lead to other countries following suit.

They sell more to us than we do to them. Why would they not do a deal ?......

I saw that yesterday haha.

What unusual language for a white paper. We had control but it didn't 'feel' like it, so we thought nads to it lol

It made me think about the prime driver - immigration, and how many of those who felt that was their main beef with the EU, actually were touched by it negatively in a tangible way?

Sunderland is a great example, post the vote and them heavily voting out there was a programme about their views about it, immigration from the EU driving down wages, taking our council houses etc etc was spouted by the locals, and yet they have next to no Eastern European immigrants up there.

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/immigrants-your-area-really-come-8197510

So were they voting on the same 'feeling' as expressed in the white paper? Bonkers.

So is freedom of movement not a benefit then, is it a punishment or a burden, if it is a benefit the it's one that we don't wish to take advantage of, so what's the problem......

It is if we go to WTO and tariffs, they sell more to us than we do to them, so they pay more tariffs than we do and we can use the tariff money to recompense U.K. Companies and make a profit

what are the reasons for not doing this then? this is all a bit over my head if i'm honest...

They sell more to us than we do to them. Why would they not do a deal ?......

2 reasons;

1. All 27 of them don't heavily export to us, and it'll need all of them to agree.

2. Why would the EU as a collective give the UK a deal that leaves us in the same position as when we were a member, but without the payments or the need to uphold the 4 pillars? It'd send out the message that you could leave, pay nothing and still have all of the benefits of membership. Never going to happen in a month of Sundays, as again it'd need all 27 to agree.

Because if it doesn't then a few of the major economies, Germany and France will suffer badly, as as not too many actually pay anything into the EU coffers they will tell those small economies to get in line or else......
