My daughter is just entering her 20's and she and her friends have sat round the kitchen table, they're all good students looking for a career in medicine, law, engineering etc etc. To a person, including my daughter, their attention is switching to where in the world they might like to work or continue post graduate studies - they cannot understand what has collectively happened to this nation of ours.

Now I know the finger can be pointed and it can be said of course they'll feel like that because they're (by virtue of the position they find themselves in) advantaged, but I have to ask if this conversation is going on around kitchen tables and student bars up and down the country, what becomes of this nation?

Our age demographics are already pretty awful, but if we see a drain of the best talent away from this country because they no longer associate themselves with the values of this government, the media and key influencers, what becomes of us?

The conversation in this thread has largely focused on the economics, but we can have an equally fraught conversation about values and messages Brexit, the removal of freedom of movement etc have on us as a nation.

The shift our nation is going through hasn't even started but it will be immense in every respect, and sadly not for the right reasons.

The Britain we grew up in, will not be the Britain of our children and grandchildren, and whilst we are far from perfect as a nation that worrues me deeply, not only for myself but for millions less fortunate who will not have the luxury of going elsewhere.

You're such a bloody drama queen. Just because we've voted to leave the EU, it's highly unlikely we'll be debarred from travelling anywhere beyond our borders. We'll be able to go on holiday, have weekend breaks and - hey! - even apply to study or work abroad. You know, like people from everywhere else in the world have to do if theyre outside the EU.

We won't suddenly become a pariah state or a nationality that is reviled by all and sundry.

The thing is, the next generation are looking at a global economy/opportunities. They see our generation and older putting up barriers and most of them don't understand why. The idea of the UK as completely unconnected nation makes no sense to them just the way the EU makes no sense to you.
You still have a romantic notion of the nation state. The next generation don't and their kids definitely won't.

So your solution is to hand more control to the Tories who oversaw that stratospheric rise in food banks ?

Interesting logic.

To me it's to hand more control to whichever government we vote in.

Though it could be the Tories we have far more ability to have radical change and action against poverty by being out of the neoliberalist globalist EU than in it.

Of course we might just carry on with similar economic policies outside the EU as in it but at least we have the theoretical chance to do something different whereas it's not going to happen inside the EU

Right, so any EU citizen can still enter the UK.

Not quite, even today the UK and Ireland have systems in place to control this. Computerised data and scanning of passports from the Eu will put a decent control in place.........It's in both our interests to sort this out, so it will be......

yes food banks everywhere we are heading for a 2 trillion debt - and the opposition way out is to borrow another 1/2 a trillion?
OK vote for the Tories then...or the kippers....the debt will always be there..anyone who thinks otherwise needs to give their head a wobble

Whilst I understand your point, nothing about Brexit changes our global outlook. If anything, it levels the playing field a bit when it comes to prospective global trading partners.

There seems to be this suggestion that we're going full North Korea and shutting ourselves off from the world. Couldn't be further from the truth.

You are not a stupid person. Yet you pop into this thread and add nothing with your comments, usually snide or arse licking of the Esk. Why not join in and at least argue a point. We all know that you have little experience of life, but so do many others who contribute greatly to this place. If this sounds harsh then I apologise, but I'd rather you contribute to the discussion, right or wrong, than this smart arse irregular visitation......

I knew before reading your post that you would be jabbering on about my age or other things which are totally inconsequential. Thank you for living up to my frankly low expectations.

Perhaps you should take a look in the mirror and realise that people could be put off posting in threads like this because people like you turn the discussion personal and insult those who disagree.

You're being embarrassingly immature and petty for somebody of such self proclaimed 'experience'.

As for sucking up to The Esk, he himself knows that I have not been afraid to criticise him or anybody else in the past on this forum. We do however agree largely on political issues, I will not apologise for this.
