That's the point I was making to @Joey66
Not whether it passes or fails. More that these divisive referendums (referenda, who knows) aren't good for a country. And three of them in 6 or 7 years could have a huge destabilizing effect.
You mean you don't ;like the results - no fuss was made on our last referendums on Europes as they were positive now we get a negative and no remainer wants to accept defeat bar a few?

True but I'm not even sure how that would work as the Republic would not turn away any EU citizens. These EU citizens could then freely cross in to the UK. They could freely gain access to part of the country but not all of it. Seems like a recipe for disaster!

Not one person who voted to leave has offered a viable solution to this problem. It's fingers in the ears - 'lalala we'll sort it out when we get there' stuff. Seems fairly indicative of the whole process to me.
What's that phrase, 'if you want to make an omelette you have to crack some eggs'? Brexit was always going to lead to some tricky logistics, but almost every decision in life has an unwanted byproduct. Doesn't mean you have to do nothing in life, in case it creates a situation you have to work around.

It is difficult to see a remotely workable solution other than a hard border at the entry points to the Republic, but not the borders between Northern Ireland and the Republic itself.

I appreciate entirely that if I was a citizen of the Republic I would find this quite abhorent and an infringement upon my rights as a EU citizen.

Yet another ghastly consequence of this ill conceived scheme called Brexit.
Brexit was not ill conceived it was voted via parliment on the basis of how the format of the voting paper should look like by a majority of 6-1 MPs followed by a three month campaign which you ESK of Remain lost - just live with it!
some remainers on here do accept the democratic decision ?????
I voted out for the first time voting twice to have a trade block not a polictical union of bullies at high cost two unnecessary parliaments etc etc

It isnt mate. Its folk raising legitimate questions/concerns that were patently not discussed/agreed prior to this vote.

As I have said, we havnt really thought this through.

That will happen when we leave it's a 43 year divorce it aint going to be simple , but believe me we are leaving a sinking ship!
If the Remain vote had won we could still face a bigger crisis ahead in the EU?

Unfortunately, I think it's inevitable that this will be a negative Consequence of Brexit.
If there is a hard border, the nationalists won't be happy.
If there's a soft border, the hard border will be forced to the airports and ferry ports of Northern Ireland, effectively cutting N.Ireland off from the rest of the Union. The unionists won't like that. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't.
Doid southern Ireland vote to not join a treaty and after being bullied by the EU had to hold another referendum?
this is what the EU wants us to do- no chance!
Southern Ireland may get out of the plagued EU with a referendum in the future imo!

The boundary isn't very long.
Build a wall, or perhaps a fence.

Before the referendum, on a Sky debate, a former Irish foreign minister said that the Republic would consider " ... Brexit as an act of war." More of the hyperbole.

The border issue was discussed ad nauseum before the vote in the six counties and had passing references in the debate over here.

Exactly my point mate. A binary decision was made based on a morass of unknowns/not even thought abouts.
Perhaps, our it was based on a handful of key points, and many lesser factors would simply have to be worked out later.

It's like needing to move house, but deciding not to cos it would mean you had to change your broadband provider.

Oh I am sure everyone voted on either an issue close to home to them, or on the wider Pro/Anti EU angle. And thats fine. But to use your broadband analogy, its more like moving house and not being sure broadband is even available.
