Sorry I've been put in my place here.. apparently despite everyone thinking it was a cold April the statistics say otherwise.. 🙄 a mass delusion has taken place, despite us all freezing our asses off for an entire month we have just been told that we basically just imagined it and the temperature was above average.. I don't know what things were like in the UK but this article says a warm start and a cold end to April, well in Ireland we didn't have a warm start or end yet they've just told us that April was in the top 20 warmest on record.

It's a radical concept, but if you take a bunch of regional temperatures, which might vary quite a bit, especially across an island, and average them together, they produce a single number--an average--which might be used to represent the average temperature of the entire island. How crazy is that!! Totally radical. It's almost as if, statistically, an average value (a single number) contains variation about that average. Whoa...stop the presses dawg. This is some deep shiiiii

Obviously, you should get to the bottom of this massive conspiracy. Someone is cooking the books. How do I know?...because you have a hunch--a hunch that it was colder than it seemed and you say scientifically repeatable and robust stuff like "...us all freezing our asses off..." and "...well in Ireland we didn't have a warm start or end..."

This is like an onion, the more you peel, the more it stinks. Huge conspiracy going on. To hell with numbers and data and all that inconvenient stuff. Trust your instincts.

Sorry you are right it was all in my head. It was actually a quite balmy April.. you are talking about unscientific words, yet here's the met office telling you that the cold was just in your head. What's with the overwhelming need to tell us that it's getting warmer, now they have gone as far as telling us we've imagined the cold.

I don't know about you guys but I definitely prefer anecdotal evidence from stale pale males telling me it's not been that hot other the evidence based presentations from scientists.
Again I must apologise. I've read what the experts have said.. the cold was in our heads, imaginary cold if you will.

That little link, that you have to show the difference in temps, I live about 10km from Oak Park which apparently had one of the highest mean temp in Ireland over April, I can assure you the mean temperature in this area was not 9.6 degrees over the month. Most nights were 3-5 degrees a few colder, most days maybe 8-12 degrees a few warmer a few colder.. I was keeping a good eye on the forecasts as the local gaa pitch was like a swamp and we were hoping to get back playing without destroying it..

That "little link" I provided is data. Yet you write, "I can assure you the mean temperature in this area was not 9.6 degrees over the month"

...gee, if there was only a way to solve this discrepancy with some sort of evidence that could arbitrate between perception and reality... Oh wait, I already did. It's called data. And the data negate your hunches and intuition.

And if you read the Telegraph article that you posted, you would see that the meteorologist notes something that has been studied quite a bit: that cloud cover and amount of sunlight modify people's perceptions of how hot/cold it is. Where you live, near Oak Park, experienced lots more rain (i.e., clouds) which can lead folks to think it's actually colder than the ambient temperature. This coupled with windy conditions (that "little link" mentioned strong gales from storm Kathleen) and rain might very well lead to subjective perception of "thermal comfort" (a fairly well-studied phenomenon, see here here here etc.). I have no doubt you thought it was cold, but it actually wasn't.

Normal people might have an "oh wow, I never knew that" type of moment when learning of this. But you--given climate change is the hill you've chosen to embarrass yourself on--decide to make all sorts of silly claims about "now they have gone as far as telling us we've imagined the cold" and "they have already said that it was in the top 20 warmest Aprils on record" and "we have just been told that we basically just imagined it", etc. Maybe just give it a rest. Data are data, subjective experience is subjective. Nothing more. There is no bigger conspiracy.

This is the crux of the matter with business execs and policiy makers, they are taught to be sociopaths by their environment. Social morphing has a true effect and we see it everyday, they then have the capital to influence those who won't read beyond a headline and matters of scientific fact become matters of debate in what is falsley presented as a 50/50 battle

Fish deaths in England’s rivers rise tenfold in four years

More than 216,000 fish died in 2022-2023, when England recorded a 54% increase in sewage spills
Mass deaths of fish in England’s rivers have increased almost tenfold since 2020, with fears sewage pollution is exterminating life in the country’s waterways.

Environment Agency (EA) data from the past four years shows an alarming rise in the number of fish deaths linked to sewage pollution, with figures escalating from 26,690 in 2020-2021 to 216,135 in 2023-2024.

The Angling Trust, which analysed the data, is calling for an urgent government intervention. The charity highlighted that there was a 54% increase in the number of sewage spills – from 301,091 n 2022 to 464,056 in 2023. This correlates with a rise in fish deaths from 42,070 in 2022-2023 to 216,135 in the 2023-2024 period.
