Worked hard, pressed, which is more than I can say for the two lads he was up there with. We obviously need better than him, but I certainly won't give out about someone who tries in the land of no-effort

I think he is effective as long as our pressing is effective. Once Barry came onto the field, he became a negative. He was running around like a headless chicken at that point.

And this sentiment is our problem. If he's garbage, which he is, it doesn't matter that he tries hard. He should be out of the team and we should be asking why he is not out of the team. We have had some genuinely high quality players that people get on the backs of over and over despite the fact that they make a big contribution to actually winning games but because they don't run about the place like a headless chicken we look for any reason to harangue them. Then we have no marks like Valencia and the Straq and countless other players over the years who contribute nothing but bust a gut bezzing about the place and we forgive them almost everything. This is why we never progress.
We have got to start demanding better.

I'm not saying he should be in the team, I'm just saying I'm not going to give him any personal stick because he at least seems bothered to be there

Some people get personal with players when they aren't good players, see @orly with Cleverley, but there's no need for that. Basically, some people are tits to bad players when it's uncalled for
I've got no problem with a bad player who tries. I have infinite more problem with a good one who doesn't
