You seem to have missed my point mate

I'm not saying he should be in the team, I'm just saying I'm not going to give him any personal stick because he at least seems bothered to be there

The stick goes to those who decided to bring him in

Some people get personal with players when they aren't good players, see @orly with Cleverley, but there's no need for that. Basically, some people are tits to bad players when it's uncalled for

I've got no problem with a bad player who tries. I have infinite more problem with a good one who doesn't

Yeah, he's not good enough, but that's no reason to be a tit
Not being a tit, just want him out of the team, out of the club and, I agree, that those at the club that thought Williams, Bolasie, Stekelenberg and him were good signings to shovel tens of millions of pounds in transfer fees and wages their way need to jeff off as well.

I am so sick of being told that a sow's ear is a silk purse and how grateful I should be that someone who gets to become a millionaire tries hard at doing the thing that any kid would give their left nut to do. That is not a positive, it is a minimum requirement.

And this sentiment is our problem. If he's garbage, which he is, it doesn't matter that he tries hard.

I would say the more problematic sentiment would be people who still think Lukaku is great despite all the visible evidence suggesting otherwise, and claiming we're blessed to have him even though he looks barely arsed and talks at length about moving to different clubs.

If you look at my other posts you will see that I have suggested selling Lukaku in the summer after we have signed a suitable replacement this January so there is some succession planning. We won't do that, we'll do what we did with Stones, i.e. we'll sell Rom and then scrabble around for whatever thirtysomething is available for an inflated price.

To your central point though, I would rather Rom put in more of a shift and that he would shut his (and his dad's and his agent's) gob. But, I would rather have a striker that does everything Rom does AND scores goals than have a whole lorry load of Valencias and Straqs who score nothing. If we didn't have a striker that scores as many goals as Rom has over the past three years we would have been relegated and that's what I worry about for next year. I don't see us easily replacing his goals.

This argument comes around every now and again, and it plainly makes no sense. If we didn't have Stekelenberg this year, we'd be relegated because there is no goalkeeper in the goals and it would be easy for teams to score.

Lukaku scores goals, but it's at the expense of the team. He destroys so many of our attacks with his brutal touch and puts our defence on the back foot so often, I'd swear he plays for the opposition sometimes. Our players have to work ridiculously hard to make anything for him, because his movement and touch are so awful. A striker who puts in a shift and has the basic elements of a professional footballer would free up our midfield, bring some of our other players in the game and we'd see a more even distribution of goals from all quarters of the field.

I cannot wait until we blow this Belgian out of the goddamn airlock and I am vindicated

You want to blow Lukaku?

Where else are our goals coming from? You say that they would come from other areas of the pitch, where? Koeman hasn't exactly been tactically flexible. He is not exactly playing to Rom's strengths is he? Pelt it up to the guy with a worse first touch than me, seems to be the tactic. Yet he still scores 9 goals.

Your comment about goalkeepers is bizarre. I wasn't suggesting we play without a centre forward at all, I just don't see what centre forward we could attract in place of Rom. We certainly can't play Kone, Valencia, Niasse or Calvert-Lewin and expect them to score as many as Rom because they are either rubbish or learning the game.

The midfield. The defence. But our traditionally roving fullbacks are hampered by the fact that the Belgian lump can't muster an accurate return pass and puts us on the back foot more often than not. Our midfield is much better than it looks, but it will never get a chance to prove it while Lukaku is up there "waiting" for service.

Why isn't Koeman setting them up that way then? As I have said before he has not set up the side to Rom's strengths, does he not trust our midfielders to score?

Rom has one strength. The ability to wait by the goal after all the hard work is done. He doesn't think he has any stake in the buildup play and is miles below the types of strikers he compares himself to because of it. We can't launch coherent, consistent attacks because they will be killed stone dead once the ball touches this lad's foot

Well, we're going to find out soon enough. I hope you're right but I don't have any faith in this mob to recruit the players needed and I don't have any faith in Koeman to move to a more fluid system. Maybe it's the bi-annual derby blues but I am worried for the future.
