In short, our army cut down 14 British citizens on the streets of a British city in a murdeous fashion which the government has admitted and indeed apologised for.

McClean is not a foreigner and he plies his trade in the same jurisdiction where he was born and raised. He has not left "his own country" to earn money in this one.

It is a mark of your complete ignorance of the situation pertaining to McClean and his antecedents that you are reduced to launching into a ludicrous tirade about the IRA and Islamic extremist supporters.

Bloody Sunday in Derry is not without precedent not so many miles away from where we now sit.

It has echoes of the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester in the century before, when British cavalrymen charged into a crowd of protesting civilians, killing many and injuring hundreds.

The moral of this, my friend, is that the army is there to protect the status quo .....and will be used to bloodily suppress a civilian demonstration on the streets of Manchester just as readily as on the streets of Derry if the government of the day see fit.

And we saw this fact demonstrated quite graphically during the Miner's strike, especially at Orgreave.

It us scandalous that this Poppy business has been forced into our football this past decade or so.

If a person wants to wear a Poppy that is their own business and it quite defeats the whole purpose of men like my grandad and father fighting against Hitler if young men are to be pillioried for not wearing one or bullied into wearing one.

the poppy represents remembrance and respect for the lost soldiers lives in WW1 and it's a disgrace that McLean lives and earns his crust in this country yet refuses to show respect.

People bang on about "far right wing parties" and all this guff in the UK general elections thread, well McLean and those who agree with him should be thankful those same soldiers he isnt respecting stepped up when needed in the 30's and 40's....

You see, that's why you need need to learn a bit about Poppy Day and indeed the geography of the United Kingdom before opening your mouth.

The Poppy started out as symbol of abhorrence at the slaughter on the Western Front but it soon became a symbol of tribute to those who died.

That was not what it was meant to do.

It then came to symbolise "all those who served in conflicts involving British forces" in the 20th century.

This would encompass the likes of the Black and Tans which were sent to terrorise the civilian population of Ireland in the 1920s as well as the soldiers who fired on the crowd on Bloody Sunday in 1972.

So.....you see the problem here for those British people who are also Irish?

Wear a poppy to salute a boy who might have shot your grandad or your uncle or sommat?
