Caught a thread on their forum re James McClean. Fair play to him, a brave and thought out decision that although I cannot understand (having very different circumstances) I admire his bringing his view to the fore and standing by his principles.

Yeah, he doesn't really explain the significance of the refusal? Just about coming from Ireland.

For people from the North of Ireland such as myself, and specifically those in Derry, scene of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, the poppy has come to mean something very different. Please understand, Mr Whelan, that when you come from Creggan like myself or the Bogside, Brandywell or the majority of places in Derry, every person still lives in the shadow of one of the darkest days in Ireland’s history – even if like me you were born nearly 20 years after the event. It is just a part of who we are, ingrained into us from birth.

This makes no sense. What's it got to with the poppy?

He says he can't wear one because it commemorates the same organisation that are guilty of cutting down innocent civilians on Bloody Sunday.
His view may not be popular, and it isn't something I could ever begin to fathom, but with us all laughing and joking at RAWK's expense, every now and then some of the better posters over there raise something that isn't so necessarily mainstream & for expanding my football horizon I appreciate their effort.

He's an utter hypocrite at the same time though, living and earning big money in THIS country, the sort of money he would never earn playing football in Ireland.

Him alongside every pro IRA and Pro islamic extremist supporters should all f off back to their countries but they don't as they know how good they have it in this country. Hypocrites.

This didn't need that. I applaud his bravery and his commitment to his principles. It takes a very courageous person to take a stand such as this in the public eye and cop the inevitable flack he will from individuals such as yourself.
Rawk is a goldmine for comedy at the moment, but now and then they cough up something well worth consideration. Thats all.
