Brendan Rodgers hit back at criticism of his team selection in Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid, insisting he was right to leave out so many key players and rejecting the allegation from Gary Lineker that he “threw in a white towel”.

Rodgers insisted Steven Gerrard had no problem with being made a substitute and revealed he had told the Liverpool captain a week ago he intended to leave him out of the game here. Some of the other players, Rodgers said, had been dropped because of their performance at Newcastle on Saturday and the Liverpool manager was unimpressed to learn Lineker had described it as “unbefitting of a club of Liverpool’s stature”.

“Gary is a figure I respect, he has been a top player, but he has never been a manager so he does not know what you’re up against with planning and training,” Rodgers said. “It was far from throwing in the white towel. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in every one of his last 11 games so my players put in a performance that did befit this club with the quality and spirit. I think the performance says it.

“I am not really bothered by criticism. We do not have a team with a consistent run of form winning five or six games consecutively so the changes were to get a performance and result. That is what happens. As the manager you are open to criticism whether it is deserved or not – and I do not worry what people think or say, I worry about my players.

“This was my idea. I had to go with my gut feeling, and my gut feeling was that the performance on Saturday was not as good as we wanted.”

Rodgers made seven changes with Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Mario Balotelli, Glen Johnson and Jordan Henderson joining Gerrard on the bench. However, Rodgers said it would be wrong to assume it was a one-off and added there was no guarantee all these players would return for Saturday’s game against Chelsea at Anfield.

“Tonight gives me food for thought. It was not players rested as such. We played a team to get the result and we nearly did. I thought we were very unfortunate not to get something out of the game. Irrespective of the Chelsea game, we picked a team to get a result. And it does not mean those who did not play will on Saturday.

“We have not been consistent enough to have guaranteed starters. I had to change the team after the performance against Newcastle. I have to show trust as a coach and a manager and now we have to be focused on Chelsea and pick a team to win that game.

“The players understood and they respect the squad will be used throughout the season. The players know the name is irrelevant to me. It’s not about the name, it is about the performance. I spoke to Steven Gerrard over a week ago and told him my plans and he was fine about it, a true professional.

“The main thing is we are disappointed with the result after an excellent performance. “We showed great courage and confidence to play and defended very well against a team that is winning by five or six goals every week – the best team in the world. Usually it is over after 50 or 60 minutes here but we deserved a point from the game.”

Rodgers was asked whether he had been worried that his own reputation might have suffered if his team selection had resulted in a heavy defeat. “Not worried at all,” he said. “We have seven games in 21 days. I did not see this as the big showpiece game where we have to play the big names. It might have seemed a gamble but for me it was not.”

Karim Benzema’s goal means Liverpool must now win their last two Champions League games, against Ludogorets and Basel, while hoping Real continue their immaculate record in Group B. “When the draw was made we thought it would come to the last game versus Basel so that is what we are focused on,” Rodgers said.

Mr. Clever thinks that because you have not been a manager then your opinion is not worth a second thought. That is unless you are waxing lyrically about how brilliant Mr Clever really is.

Rodgers actually thinks they should have got a draw. Incredible, the buffoon must have been watching a different game from the rest of us. How could they have got a draw, when the RS parked the bus and were useless on the counter attack with only 2 shots on goal and 2 wide.

Mr Clever is a dead man walking and no wonder he planned to stay in Madrid an extra day, so as to keep himself away from the flak.

Or maybe he is doing some shopping and wants to buy some of these.

Oh how the mighty have fallen

When do they receive there "We stopped Ronaldo from scoring" trophy

Honestly I would be mortified if we had gone out to Madrid, Parked the bus or 90 mins, Showed zero attacking threat, Had one shot on target with less than 40% of the ball and then our fans and manager try to spin it as some sort of moral victory

Christmas mate.

As for the fight with Lineker, once the media turn and the goodwill runs out, unless your successful you've had it. To claim it wasn't a weakened side is just plain stupid, anyone who believes that is thick or deluded. I think his days are numbered now.

"Liverpool went away having avoided the hiding so many had predicted but they had left with nothing all the same. It was a display worthy of a typically spirited La Liga underdog. What the whole of Spain will be asking today is: was it worthy of Liverpool".

Mr Clever sounds like a Conference team manager who takes his team to Chelsea and comes away with getting beat 1-0. 'My players dug in', 'they performed admirally', 'Chelsea have been banging goals in for fun, but we limited them to just 1 goal', 'we didn't play a few because we have a big game against Grimsby on Saturday in the Conference, the bread and butter game' etc..

How the 'mighty' have fallen. The manager of the 'biggest and best' club in the world 'happy' with a 1-0 loss and trying to convince the football world it was a 'victory' and part of a great 'plan'. Small time from a tuppence ha'penny buffoon.

Fair play to Mr Clever, it was a masterclass. Who else would have thought of putting out the second string so as to upset Ronaldo's ego into thinking "I'm not here to beat up reserve sides, I need to beat the best" thereby forcing RM to play with 10 men. Ok the 10 men still battered the RS (27/4, 9/1) and actually won the game, a fact airbrushed out of existence by the RS hoards. Mr Clever can hold his head high, fully vindicated that his make it up as we go along philosophy brought RM to their knees. Surely this deserves another flag..........

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches,
the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (in descending
order):
a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the
teams in question;
b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams
in question;
c) higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the
teams in question;
d) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches
played among the teams in question;
e) if, after having applied criteria a) to d), teams still have an equal ranking,
criteria a) to d) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the
teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does
not lead to a decision, criteria f) to h) apply;
f) superior goal difference from all group matches played;
g) higher number of goals scored from all group matches played;
h) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,
as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

RS 2 Ludo 1
Basel 4 Ludo 0
Ludo 1 Basel 0
Basel 1 RS 0
RS v Basel
Ludo v RS

Basel 3-6 5-1
RS 2-3 2-2
Ludo 3-3 2-6

The tiebreaker will not go down to coefficient as it will be broken before then - the closest example would be 4-0 Ludo and 4-0 RS leaving

Ludo 4-6 6-6
RS 4-6 6-6
Basel 4-6 5-5

Ludo would win out RS would be 3rd, Basel eliminated.

A draw for Basel against Real and defeat for RS in Bulgaria ensures that they cannot qualify. If Ludo win 1-0 or by 2 or more they lose that tiebreaker as well. Either way they must beat Basel (by 2 goals) to win that tiebreaker. A 1-0 win vs Basel ensures a further tiebreaker but, at the moment, they still lose out on GD.

A draw in Bulgaria coupled with a Real win in Basel leaves the RS placed to steal 2nd with a win in the final game

RS 7
Basel 6
Ludo 4 (and one assumes a loss at Real - or elimination in head-to-head v RS)

two losses for Basel leaves them level with RS pending their result in Bulgaria.

If Ludo were to win 1-0 at home to the RS, would they win the head to head on the away goals rule?

Do away goals become a factor in the event of zero goal difference between two teams level on points?

The other question that has to be asked of course, is, if his supposed second string team that he put out, expecting them to perform as they did and reduce Real to only beating them by a solitary goal is such great management by himself. How come he got it oh so wrong at Anfield.

There is the question to be asked, that, if his ideas and tactics last night were so right, maybe his entire season has been one of abject failure for himself. He clearly doesn't have the depth of knowledge of his own squads capabilities that he believes he does. If his second string can perform better than the team he puts out on the majority of occasions, surely that would suggest poor management decisions are the root cause for the teams downfall, and ultimate failure.
