That would have been a fantastic result if it was a 2 legged tie. It gives some promise that if we advance Brendan can set up a team to go to places like Bayern , Barca, Madrid and play a more appropriate style than the open expansve risk taking we usually see

Lucas was not just our best player but the best player on the pitch along with the young Madrid defender who is actually Jocky Hansen in disguise. Special mention, too, for Kolo Toure and Mignolet and also Markovic who showed us he's got something in his locker. But to be fair they were all terrific.

Chelsea haven't got a prayer on Satdee.

Brilliant from Liverpool FC and those lads can hold their heads high, should gain great confidence from that. Brendan Rodgers called it spot on.

"Liverpool went away having avoided the hiding so many had predicted but they had left with nothing all the same. It was a display worthy of a typically spirited La Liga underdog. What the whole of Spain will be asking today is: was it worthy of Liverpool".

Mr Clever sounds like a Conference team manager who takes his team to Chelsea and comes away with getting beat 1-0. 'My players dug in', 'they performed admirally', 'Chelsea have been banging goals in for fun, but we limited them to just 1 goal', 'we didn't play a few because we have a big game against Grimsby on Saturday in the Conference, the bread and butter game' etc..

How the 'mighty' have fallen. The manager of the 'biggest and best' club in the world 'happy' with a 1-0 loss and trying to convince the football world it was a 'victory' and part of a great 'plan'. Small time from a tuppence ha'penny buffoon.

You forgot to mention character - the lads showed great character to keep finding for the 90 minutes.

Trademark Rodgers mate. It is not exactly Everton's DNA though, they simply arent phenominal like we are. :)

Lol. From what I saw they were played off the park. But they are all excited about only losing 1-0 on the scoresheet.

Mail actually calling it for what it is

They got what they came for: defeat with honour. It is pointless Brendan Rodgers trying to spin it any other way. There is no way Liverpool could have hoped to win in the Bernabeu Stadium with this team.

That they survived with dignity intact is as much by luck as judgement. Yes, Liverpool worked very hard, defended tenaciously and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet – one of the few first-team regulars to keep his place – was magnificent.

Yet it also needed Gareth Bale to hit the bar, Cristiano Ronaldo to take one touch too many repeatedly and Real Madrid, collectively, to squander enough chances to have won by double figures.

Honestly if Madrid had taken their chances it would have been 4 or 5.

Anyone who thinks it was a good performance is the type of person who thinks Alex Ferguson controls the referees and Kenny Daglish is tolerant of all racial groups
