You see this sort of thing a lot in the USA. I understand becoming a supporter in the last 10 year's because we, as a country, are just now being really exposed to footy and the premier league. I'll put myself on that line even, since I went my first of two decades without really having access to watch the sport.
The real distinction should not be made on time of support, but on loyalty and soundness. As analogy, I know a couple of blerts who have 'supported' the Lakers in NBA basketball for beards. However, their team is a bit gash this year and the crosstown historically joke of a rival in the Clippers have been looking quite good. If you talk to them now, you'll find them to be all about the Clippers.
