Their transfer business has been honking. In the last 7 or 8 years they've recruited really well. Swerved the flavour of the month in favour of players who fit the ethos, style of play, no egos, hard workers and so on. The Jota signing was a perfect example. I remember being sickened when he signed for them - was a proper sign that they knew what they were doing.
This year they've just gone out and signed the shiny things. Frimpong and Kerkez are awful bits of business. I rate Wirtz and Ekitike but they are shoehorning them around Salah (supposedly undroppable, despite being awful) and Isak (had one good season and is made out of tracing paper). They'll be stuck with these lot on massive wages for some time.
They are, despite what they'd kid you on to thinking, not a team of winners. They act as though they are Man City, with a trophy winning ethos cut through the club and prepared to win season after season. In the last 20 years they've really not won many major honours, and if you discount league cups won in the early 2010s and some Charity Shields, it's only really 4 trophies since 2005/6. The serial winners of old (your John Terrys, Rio Ferdinands etc.) talk about preparing for the next season as soon as the last one finishes. They are basking in their own glory and have been complacent this year. Same as the last prem they won.
In addition, they've just handed two massive contracts to VVD and Salah. Both are playing as though they have nothing to gain from playing well, which they don't. Salah has been dreadful which has been a trend for while. He inflates his stats with pens and one unreal game every three, but some games you watch him and he is vacant. VVD is so entitled and is as much as an issue as the rest of the defence, despite what the pundits want you to believe. Who has really been protecting who there? Strolling around the gaff.
And to think they are ready to can Humpty Dumpty. All my RS mates want him out. Fickle fans who think they are entitled to more than they are, but can't explain why
I absolutely love it
FSG’s recruitment was always overblown.
Their best period under Klopp they had some good value for money signings yes. Robertson, Salah, Mane, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Matip good players who outperformed their fee.
Then they had some players who were good but they paid through the nose for them. Allison (world record fee) Van Dijk (world record fee) Diaz 50 mill, Jota 50 mill, Konate.
Even Klopp also had terrible buys in Nunez, Keita, Thiago (injured and massive wages), Minamino, Solanke, Grujic, Endo, Tsimikas.
But take the Rodgers and Dalglish eras after they first took over: Carrol, Downing, Adam, Allen, Balotelli, Benteke, Can, Markovic, Moreno, Origi, Sakho, Aspas, Borini, Coates, Enrique, Lambert, Clyne, Ings.
How much did that pile of excrement cost? All under FSG.
And now we have Isak 130 mill, Wirtz 115 mill, Ekitike 90 mill, Kerkez, Frimpong. Only Ekitike looks even ok out this lot.
They had one purple patch under Klopp when they recruited well and that was mostly paying big fees for established players. He also used Alexander Arnold, Henderson, and Firmino who Rodgers had bought.
Take out Salah Mane Robertson Fabinho and the whole FSG moneyball brilliant recruitment is a complete and utter myth.
They’ve spent tons of cash and wasted loads of it as well.
