so no one ever has been given a managerial job with no experience and not been successful then?
Sorry davek, didn't see you post the Hutchinson thing here, I just started a thread on it. Sorry mate.
I think it's a story that is obviously going to shine more in Hutchinsons light, because it's from his point of view. Whether or not that's actually how it went down is another story all together. What did you make of it?
Has he proven himself?
I'm not saying a coach cant be promoted, I'm questioning the wisdom of doing it.

I'm sure Kenwright would love a no cost replacement for Martinez when he eventually goes.I can see where you are coming from Dave. There is a LOT more to managing a club than coaching a first team. But I am also kind of hopeful that when RM does move on that an internal succession plan is at least an option. Thus RM involves his 2IC in more than just coaching duties ...ie interacting with scouts, knowledge of the transfer market, loan market and all its nuances etc.
As a manager/owner myself, I always have a couple of contingency plans if the surprising happens...or indeed the inevitable (ie valuable human resource moving on)
Well Smith didn't make him captain, so that part is B.S.
It wouldn't shock me in the slightest if Smith did nearly attack him in the dressing room, as that was what him and Knox were like. They definitely wouldn't get away with that sort of thing these days. Alan Myers told a story at his Tea Party a few weeks back about Knox trying to attack him.
I think Hutchinson was exaggerating to prove his point about what Newcastle should do.
I was surprised at the stuff about Smith belittling Watson and Unsworth though. Whether true or not, I've always thought Smith ran the playing side really badly during his tenure.
We might get Dennis Lawrence as manager. Same credentials as Ferguson managerial wise.
so now its "might" but was "have to" ok dave.
other extreme we could get guardioila as he had even less experience or even worse mourinho as he was just an interpreter.
extremes i know but following your lead.
