Current Affairs Don't mention the War !

It's not a simple issue though, because it has to encompass the entirety of history. I think the sensible view to take is to be immensely proud of the achievements of the UK and also be deeply embarrassed and ashamed by some of its actions. You can see that in microcosm in the war.
Yes, my argument is you can’t choose to take the pride but not the shame

Possibly because we fought a war that left us bankrupt and enduring rationing for years. Then when you ask why did we fight this war, because we could have just stayed out of it, it seems there was a moral issue. Now while we still remember it, because as you say we paid a very heavy price, it seems that Europe has conveniently forgotten it, and the likes of France positively hate us for liberating them. It’s Europe you see, we don’t understand them, and they don’t understand us, and never will.........

Excellent post. I think you are probably fighting a losing battle though. Remember, the war was fought by people who are now old. Ergo, the new enemy.

The problem isn't those who served (of whom very few remain), but those who came after them and are quite happy to life off their coat tails as they puff up both their own importance and that of Albion.

As opposed to those insufferable kids who are inheriting the wealth that the baby boomers generated after rebuilding both the country and the economy in the decades after the war. All credit goes to my parents generation for what they did, yet you ungrateful sods cannot see past your next iPhone.......

Learned antiquity, throughout all its stay, was never as enlightened as we are today ;)

Peter really hates young people.

And it wasn’t the Boomers who built up the country in the “decades after the war”.

We were in nappies and short trousers for the first decade and a half after it.

We were teenage hipsters, dancing to the Beatles and Stones throughout the next decade.

Then we were pot smoking hippies, protesting Vietnam and shagging anything that stayed still for long enough in the decade that followed,......or punk.....or hedonistic Disco dancing party people.

It was the 1980s before the Boomers inherited the earth......and by that time the heavy lifting had been done by our parent’s generation.

Rephrase that Parisians hate most people - I know someone who lives outside Paris who are English , and get on great with the local French who don't like Parisians?.......
My daughters been to Paris twice she found them very rude and no manners ...... that's her interpretation of Paris - she only went to Euro Disney land twice!
I nearly went to Paris last week Joe.... I found a French letter with come in it.

That’s fine, but do not underestimate the effort put in a full two years before either the USA or Russia joined in, nor the economical sacrifice of the richest economy at the start of the war. It’s easy to denigrate but the facts are still the facts...
As an eminent Historian once said; "The trouble with history is that you never know what will happen tomorrow".
