I do think Captain Mainwaring's (fictional) patriotism was wholly justified. The EU project - a Europe where fascist oppression was simply unthinkable - is essentially what he (and Churchill in the real world) was fighting for.Why would an organisation that was established in part to prevent war on the continent take note of a British prime minister using such language against them in any kind of positive way? They would quite rightly view such actions incredibly poorly and hold Britain in even lower esteem than they do as a result of the last few years of Tory rule. Of course, you could then use that as an example of how the nasty bullies don't let us get our way, which fits this frankly bizarre bipolar mindset of being tub-thumping Captain Mainwarings and snivelling victims depending on how the mood takes.
