Down 2756 points since the high on Jan 26.

10.4% down.
Official correction territory.

Of course the stock market does not equal the "real" economy and this only takes us back to where we were in November. But this bull run is pretty old and I doubt we have reversed market cycles entirely. Trump following similar spending patterns as Bush might also be spooking the bond market.

Can't really speak about that, just interesting to hear from an anti-Trump republican. They are out there, apparently.

Max Boot isn't much of a Republican, nor is Rubin, Ana Navarro, etc. It's the Sorkin-ish Newsroom concept. Use an attention-seeking person with ties to the right to be the sanctimonious Republican bashing the Republican president.

That aside, there are plenty of people who are critical of the President and are legitimately conservative. I just wouldn't put these neocons among them. And it's odd to watch people who used to think Max Boot was an authoritarian for being a big military interventionist who will now rally to him and claim he's some liberty-loving hero because he called Trump a dictator.

Because the GOP holds majorities and the WH and DACA isn't a priority. Border security is a priority.

The GOP doesn't care about DACA. They just want to end the saga. It's a priority for the left. It'd be silly to give it away for free AND leave open the possibility that we confront another DACA-style issue in a decade. Of course, in reality, that's what'll happen. We'll do a DACA deal, only modest immigration fixes will be accomplished, and we'll do this all again in 2030.
Then they probably shouldn’t lie and say they care about it, and that they want to protect the 800,000 young people, and just admit they see them as political pawns that they’re happy to ransom.

And tbh, if DACA isn’t a priority for them, they need to take a long hard look at themselves. It’s the closest thing to a moral imperative there is on the slate at the moment.

C'mon man. We're talking about politics. I'm not going to disparage your motivations, but the truth is that big swaths of both sides do not care at all about those 800k people. They're political fodder. So are me and my guns and my religion. So are gay people and black people. We're all viewed as political assets.

FWIW I don't think it's a moral imperative at all, and when the left comes at me with moral pleas I tend to discount them anyway.

Do you genuinely not think it’s a moral imperative to allow people to remain in a country they came to through no fault of their own, and where they have now built lives and connections, rather than forcibly returning them to a country they have little to no experience of?

I feel pretty sorry for you if you’re genuinely that cold.

I'm aware of only one deportation that tugged my heartstrings so to speak. The others tend to involve felons, which I'm not all that concerned with.

If we get to the point where people are being ripped from their families because of the absence of a DACA fix, then I might share your concern. But right now it's not high on my moral imperative list. In general, the people who tell me it's my moral obligation to fix this problem are going to call me a hateful bigot for wanting to avoid this problem in the future.

Personally I'm in favour of counter cyclical spending so that when rest of economy doing poorly government takes up the slack and then pulling back doing well - has nothing to do with which party is in office at the time.

Although iirc Rand voted for the tax cuts himself so he is being a bit disingenuous here.

I have a lot of issues with Rand, but he's 100% correct on the hypocrisy.

Some of his fellow GOP senators seem to have a few issues with him as well

One retiring Republican lawmaker, Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, went further. “When Rand Paul pulls a stunt like this, it easy to understand why it's difficult to be Rand Paul's next door neighbor,” said Dent, referring to the neighbor who assaulted Paul last year, breaking several of his ribs and sending him to the hospital. “The whole delay and filibuster exercise on the budget agreement is utterly pointless.”

They don't really exist as they used to, no. And I don't think it's accurate to say he got everything he wanted.

We aren't governed in a dictatorship. Compromises have to me made, that is the essence of democracy. We the People are supposed to be represented. This bipartisan agreement was a total bend over by the Dems. The fact you don't see it that way is beyond me. He got everything he wanted AND got approval for American taxpayers to pay for it. Not a peso in sight.

If Trump ever merely sought 1.6m for the wall (I know that's the DHS request), and then came back later and said "oh that's not enough I need a firm commitment for the remaining billions," then you're correct. But I doubt that's the case. I suspect Trump's position has been he wants a commitment on the wall/border security as part of any resolution of DACA, and just a fraction of the wall would be a non-starter.

The $1.6 billion for the stupid wall was year one of the DHS's budget for the idiotic wall. He does not deserve a blank check of American taxpayers money over 10 years until the costs and other factors are analyzed. Did I mention that he is asking for $18 million of American taxpayers money? He is going FAR BEYOND his campaign promise and yet it's still not enough.

If you see border security/wall as a necessary accompaniment to any pathway to citizenship for a couple million people, why would you take a fraction of what you think you need to accomplish that objective? Democrats would get essentially everything they want now, while 90% of what you want is deferred and can be subsequently obstructed. If you're a Trump voter, wouldn't you be pissed if the "master negotiator" did that deal?

He got everything he wanted and then some in that bipartisan agreement. Both parties sucked it up and played the game. He threw his toys out of the pram because Miller told him that his base would flip out over the DACA part. Simple as that. If you could show me his exact proposal he presented to the Gang of Six regarding his repayment of the wall funds he's requesting then I'm all ears. Otherwise keep blindly supporting this wannabe dictator.

So damn frustrating arguing with brainwashed people. He could have had a rally in Bumfudge, Alabama and easily have spun his bigly deal making skills.
