As a Bernie fan, I don't think it was that straightforward. They would've hammered him as a 'commie' - A very dirty word to Americans. A poll last year by Gallup showed only 35% of Americans see socialism as a good thing compared to 60% for capitalism. Even among Democrats, socialism polled at only 58% positive. Trump would use the scare tactic that Bernie wanted to take all their money and give it to poor and unemployed people - and we all know poor people are lazy, right?
There's also the financing issue. Would Bernie have been able to keep up with Trump's campaign spend without turning to alternative revenue sources? His money was running dangerously low in May 2016. Could small donations have carried a run at the presidency? I'm not sure.
I don't think anyone could say with certainty that Bernie would've walked it.
Also, don't know whether or not, when it came down to crunch time, wikileaks, etc would have tried to smear his campaign as much as possible. There was a wee controversy over his wife being under investigation, etc.
