I always remember Margaret Thatcher dealing with a chap called Arthur Scargill, her strategy was not to attack him but purely to give him enough rope to effectively hang himself, which he promptly did.......

I’m not going to get into a miners dispute debate but It’s fair to say it’s a divisive issue. Would I be wrong in saying MI5 monitoring the NUM , over 11,000 arrests , the government having clandestine meetings with the UDM, thousands of police deployed all over the community , considered to be the most violent industrial action of the modern British era including a number of deaths and a events like the battle of orgreave still controversial today . Thatcher used the media , obviously the murdoch media , to absolutely pillory Scargill never mind the ‘enemy within ‘stuff .

Like I say not for this thread but I can’t believe anyone would use the miners strike as a template .

Excellent post btw, but nothing to do with the point I was making. Publicly, Thatcher just ignored him and gave him no ammunition to fire back. Trumps opponents could do with trying a different strategy as the current one merely plays into his hands.......just an opinion......

Rejected the notion that Bernie would have won, which is debatable. Not exactly going to admit that on the tellybox anyway, like.

Trump is not hanging himself, though. His racist divisive rhetoric is promoting social instability and sowing even greater division in the country. His bullshit is being bought by a substantial amount of Americans. To let this go unchallenged is unthinkable and negligent.

And you're convinced that opposing him hasn't worked? He has a house and senate majority but is failing to pass legislation. He's losing key backers in industry and finance. Exposition of his lies and bigotry is making him toxic. And all the while, Mueller is gleaning more and more info on Russian ties to rig the election.

This isn't 80s Britain. This is the constitution of the USA being bent towards breaking. This is centuries-old conventions being usurped.

The universe I refer to is one where you win. Your present strategy of attacking him doesn’t seem to be working that well. Of course you could keep attacking him endlessly and somehow expect a different result, I think it’s called insanity........

People aren't attacking him Pete. To attack suggests a deliberate attempt to uncover weakness in someone. No one's doing that. The platform he has, both as President but also via social media, give him all the 'rope' you suggest he needs, and he makes an utter fool of himself on a seemingly daily basis. No one is actively trying to make him look an arse, he's doing that all by himself.

The question is, why do you constantly seem to apologise for him?

My apologies if you feel I was going off on an tangent in my defence it’d been a long day and I was watching the boxing . However to sort of support my position avoiding discussing scargill didn’t stop the biggest and most bloody industrial dispute in British history whichever side of the line your political ideology puts you and the idea of a politicial equivalent happening across America is surely terrifying ? Power and influence decreased because of the closure of the mines and I’m not sure how that’d translate to trump , also I think we can agree thatcher utilised the media to wage a war afainst the ‘enemy within’ even if accept your point she certainly didn’t completely ignore him.

It's not debatable mate, Bernie would of walked an election against Trump.

As a Bernie fan, I don't think it was that straightforward. They would've hammered him as a 'commie' - A very dirty word to Americans. A poll last year by Gallup showed only 35% of Americans see socialism as a good thing compared to 60% for capitalism. Even among Democrats, socialism polled at only 58% positive. Trump would use the scare tactic that Bernie wanted to take all their money and give it to poor and unemployed people - and we all know poor people are lazy, right?

There's also the financing issue. Would Bernie have been able to keep up with Trump's campaign spend without turning to alternative revenue sources? His money was running dangerously low in May 2016. Could small donations have carried a run at the presidency? I'm not sure.

I don't think anyone could say with certainty that Bernie would've walked it.

I don’t, or at least I didn’t think I did. However he isn’t always wrong, I think his high risk strategy against N Korea will pay dividends. Mostly he is a fool and it’s fine for everyone to have a go at him, but no one is always wrong. Just trying to bring a bit of balance. It’s easy just to denigrate everything he says or does. I cannot stand Obama, but even he said or did the right thing every now and again.......

I think he would have won, probably by a record margin - for all the talk about socialism / communism / fascism (which is basically where any discussion with the US right over left wing values ends up), he would have picked up many people who voted for Trump as a stick to beat the establishment with and probably wouldn't have lost that many Clinton voters (though the defeated Democrat elements would have kicked off in the same way that the PLP did).
