I believe that @abelard understands the electoral college just fine. He doesn't accept the bounds of our constitution as written. That's the issue. The "forward" nature of progressivism since Wilson began to write academically on government is based on turning constitutional government into Calvinball. Only the right (or left, really) people get to make those decisions, and we are poorer as a nation if we handcuff our betters from taking matters into their own hands.

That is what Clinton's folk said, but it was denied by Wikileaks. As for Le Pen, a rather larger boost to her campaign has come from the outrages in Nice, at the Bataclan etc; the Russians might be funding them now but of course they have been funding other parties, including over here, for years.

As for Merkel, if they wanted to influence that election then they could just turn the gas off - but her handling of the migration crisis has been so actively bad they probably don't have to do anything if they want her out.
