Some good news
Foolish and stupid conduct by our president FTW.
Some good news
An apology is not in order and I'm not giving you one. You openly admit to voting conservative and support their view - I said you had right wing views, the Tory part are right wing. I didn't say you were a Nazi, I said you defended the right wing view. There is a difference between right wing and far right wing, but I thought you'd know that. The reason I mentioned the declaration was because it's official, its legal, its war. Whoever had won would have written the history of the war and written the future. If we hadn't have won, trust me, everyone on here would be spouting Nazi propaganda. My whole argument has been that intolerance is on the rise and that this must be avoided. You accuse me of defending a right wing view yet I have said nothing to support them, I support a centrist view and socialist concern, so perhaps an apology might be in order. We may not agree but do not paint me a colour and assume that's a prepositioned viewpoint.....
What does that mean. And why should anyone take note of a politicians spouse......

You kind of agree with Grouch though don't you? You said whoever wins massively influences the country during their tenure. Trump has won and he openly promotes the alt-right way of thinking. I've little doubt that had Brexit been delivered by a Farage rather than a May, we would have had similar protestations about foreigners here because they speak from the same playbook.
If intolerance is to be avoided, perhaps we should stop voting for things that the intolerant think is great?
As for why this particular statue of his had become a frontline on the discussion about Trump it is probably because there was a domestic terrorist incident killing three and injuring many others that resulted from protests about its removal - that tends to bring focus on an issue , especially when the president says that there were many fine people among the white supremacists objecting to the removal.

And yes war may have been declared legally, so does that mean we let Nazi's openly march without opposition until there's a war? One of those Nazi's drove a car into a crowd by the way. Is that ok until way is declared?
Oh I know the consequences of the melee at that particular statue Links, what I am wondering is why this particular statue became the focus of attention in the first place.
If Lee's statue is deemed offensive in Charlottesville Va. then surely it is also offensive, nay more offensive to the memory of the many sons and daughters of former slaves interred there after giving their lives for their country, to have a memorial honouring him in Arlington.
Are statues of Lee are to be removed from some sites but left in situ elsewhere?
I have always admired the way America had moved on from the Civil War and it was not an issue which weighed heavily on life a century and a half later.
This incident, though, reminds me of how in Northern Ireland trouble can suddenly start over events which happened way before the lifetimes of even the grandparents of the people protesting about this or celebrating that.
So intolerance only exists within the opposite side of the argument and not your own........
To be honest, I look upon America (a country I've always held in high regard) with utter despair at the moment, but when the state is essentially sponsoring a particular form of intolerance then that takes things to another level entirely, whether that's in America or Venuzuela, Poland or South Africa.
I mean a large number of my in-laws protested (violently) against the Soviet occupation of their country in the 60s, and in no way whatsoever do I regard them as equally culpable as the state sponsored militia, or the state backed civil service that enforced their doctrine.
Throughout human history, and across the world, terrible things happen when the state visibly represents a particular group (often along ethnic or religious lines) and that either explicitly or tacitly results in the oppression of the 'out group'. That's the situation we're facing in America at the moment, and it's wrong.
I just happen to believe that the use of violence for political aims is wrong. It will always turn the centre ground against it. Until violence and aggressive acts are put away there is no chance of moving forward. Like you I love America, but the irrational levels of hate being generated are not serving democracy.....
I can't speak on behalf of Americans, but from speaking to my in-laws about the Prague Spring, violence was often the only recourse left available in an environment where the state controlled most peaceful means of protest (particularly the press), whilst continuing to oppress those against them.
In the States, Trump has been persistent in his fake news tirade against the free press, and seems unwilling to countenance any type of cooperation with the Democrats, so what choice is there for people to speak out against those whom they vehemently disagree with (and whom have tacit state backing)?
I feel overwhelmingly sorry for a fine country that is being mullered by an utter cretin in the White House.
