I don't.

They voted in a democratic system for an obvious idiot. They collectively are reaping what they sowed. It's the dumbest country on earth.

I feel sorry only for those who didn't vote for the idiot and saw the obvious of what he was, but not the country as a whole.
Come on now.

The only reason he got in is the electoral college. More people wanted somebody else for President.

And don't get so uppity there tubes, you guys voted for Brexit and not so long ago, allowed Teresa May to remain in power.

Which is a silly thing to say since it treats a whole country as a single entity. The truth is, most Americans did not vote for the orange imbecile.

Yes, and I don't feel sorry for those who voted for Brexit either. An equally stupid decision, so if someone said they felt sorry for the UK, I'd say they shouldn't, because we collectively made our own bed on that one and we should lie in it. As for May, she may be terrible, but compared to Trump she's a Roosevelt/JFK - it's not comparable.

Doesn't matter about the numbers - it's a democratically accepted system and he won it. Therefore, the country as a whole is accountable for it. That's democracy.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for the USA collectively over this. Why should I, they got what they wanted.

That doesn't matter. Neither does the silly 'Not My President' logic which was prevalent for both Obama and Trump.

It's democracy and therefore collective responsibility. The vote wasn't rigged, Trump won fair and square because the country as a whole enabled him to get into that position.

Politically, that vote was the result of a single entity - because win or lose the populace respects the outcome because the mechanisms for deciding it were agreed beforehand. Again, democracy.

Absolutely not!!!!!

We got what about 15 million people wanted......the rest were made up of 'I vote my party regardless' and people who explicitly voted against the opponent.

Bit hard to say that the US collectively wanted this. Because the USA did not want this, collectively or not.

You clearly did, because a democratic vote decided it... if not, then that election wasn't democracy, as the mechanisms weren't agreed by democratic principles.

You are effectively calling the election undemocratic if you don't believe the USA as a whole voted in a system that respects the outcome.

It's not proportional representation - you voted for a presidential candidate. An individual who presides. It's an outright winner.

I can't even be bothered with you.

Are you a secret Trump supporter?? As you have done a fantastic job of taking this right off the topic at hand.

(that is said in jest mate......calm down!!!!)

Way to much faith being put in democracy as a system here Tubes.

I'm simply saying I don't feel sorry for the USA as a country, because the required standard to be met for that idiot being President was met in a democratic system.

In much the same way as I thought Obama 'birthers' and those who generally disavowed his presidency were idiots and under no circumstances would I feel 'sorry' for the country as a whole for that nonsense, I don't feel sorry for the country as a whole that Trump is in office.

It works both ways.

Not an ounce of compassion in you is there?

I can't speak on behalf of Americans, but from speaking to my in-laws about the Prague Spring, violence was often the only recourse left available in an environment where the state controlled most peaceful means of protest (particularly the press), whilst continuing to oppress those against them.

In the States, Trump has been persistent in his fake news tirade against the free press, and seems unwilling to countenance any type of cooperation with the Democrats, so what choice is there for people to speak out against those whom they vehemently disagree with (and whom have tacit state backing)?

I feel overwhelmingly sorry for a fine country that is being mullered by an utter cretin in the White House.

They have a vote, pure and simple. I see that the tearing down of confederate statues is gathering pace. I wonder what will be the next symbol that will be needlessly destroyed.....

Have you ever tried just listening to people for a change, to see if you can learn something? Even just once, to see what it might be like?

There are many on here who I find put across a differing viewpoint in a way that makes a great deal of sense and I will willingly accept. Comments such as the above don't really do it.......

Yes, for those who didn't vote for Trump. But not the country as a whole.

What's hard to understand here?

I do kind of get what you're saying . I said in a different thread some time ago part of me over this and Brexit is almost ' let it burn' , you've got what you wanted and the odds in both scenarios are that I'll be ok because of where I find myself in life whether that's my nationality or my financial position .

At first glance I also find it hard to be particularly upset over people terrified of losing their healthcare recently who has in fact voted for trump . However I suppose in all cases I then find a degree of compassion for what's going on and the situations people find themselves in. People who voted trump and then were in danger of losing their healthcare might have been stupid , in my opinion , but they didn't deserve to die for it .

It's clearly democracy and people get what they vote for but it doesn't mean the whole thing isn't very sad .

In short I do get your position even if I don't fully empathise with it.

Edit : the above probably makes absolutely no sense so if that's the case my apologies for not being able to translate my point onscreen .
