Trump is just following what the US has done since probably the 1900's - draw up plans to attack countries it doesn't like. Nothing unusual about Trump rhetoric as it is par for the course for US presidents, which would indicate he will act on his rhetoric as he is backing himself into a corner. This will not end well for the US - as it didn't in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. or the Korean peninsula and will drag China into the mix. It's going to be a very hot summer and autumn.

Will be interesting to see when the Tories start banging the anti North Korean war drum.

It's just words for now. As Tillerson said, NK seem to ignore diplomatic language, and by way of trying to cover up for his Presidents bellicose rhetoric, suggested that maybe Trumps words will get through. They won't of course, it just pushes people further into a corner. Nothing will happen, because apart from totally wiping out the North there isn't really very much the USA can do. Trump will need to save face of course, so expect to hear and see words and tweets showing how the economic sanctions are doing the job. The issue remains though that while the Kim dynasty is in place and Kim feels no personal threat then this will continue into the next Presidency......

So Trump has to put up or shut up. If he 'puts up' as previous US presidents have - launched military action - then he will come back with his tail between his legs as previous presidents have. Or he 'shuts up' as that is deemed 'weak' by the generals he has surrounded himself with and they will be telling him that 'others will use this weakness to stand up to the US'. And it will be seen as 'weak' by some of those that voted for him.

Trump has backed himself into a loss loss corner as has for previous US presidents. North Korea has yet again stood up to the US and made it beg China to 'restrain' North Korea. As with previous US presidents North Korea is the US's Achilles heel and made them look like they are full of bluster and weak.

and in most 'somebody (anybody) actual pulls a trigger, S.K. / Seoul gets a pasting

I reckon most Americans haven't even heard of Saipan. Or what about one of the smaller American islands in the Northern Marianas?

Would it make a point for them to successfully launch and hit an uninhabited island there?

FWIW I saw a rocket launch from Vandenberg one night driving up 101. I have no idea what level was launched...it didn't make the press.

Yep, the North have a permanent gun to the head of the South, so unless they have a cunning plan to demolish the Norths artillery or dramatically grow Busan and relocate 10,000,000 people to the south coast, it will remain so......

Shock and awe did exactly what it said on the tin. It was the following occupation that went belly up.

For @Dylan as well, while the DPRK do have a large arsenal of artillery it is, at least to the majority of its arsenal, a fallacy that Seoul is in reach.

Only the larger, far less mobile artillery can reach Seoul and once located it's expected that effective US/ROK counter-battery would neutralise it.

Same with the much touted 'rocket force'. Don't get me wrong, they'd be able to strike the capital but the whole annihilation scenario isn't true.

It's their brigade/corps orientated smaller artillery and MRLs lined up within range of the DMZ that is the real threat as they're extremely potent.

I dunno man, Seoul is only 35 miles from the border. I'd say they could reek havoc given half a chance.
