or become bankrupt so then they qualify for Medicaid.

I have a patient with type 1 diabetes. On medicaid as a kid and diabetes was well controlled. Aged out of medicaid and really hasn't had insurance since. Before ACA he couldn't get insurance because he had a preexisting condition. He briefly had insurance via the ACA but lost it because he couldn't keep paying the premiums and pay for meds, doctors visits, food, housing etc. If NC had expanded Medicaid under the ACA , he would be eligible. He tries to work two jobs, but struggles due to his health.

His diabetes has been poorly controlled for nearly 10 years and he's now lost top third of his foot.

He is late 20s early 30s and will end up disabled and unable to work by age 40 if not sooner if nothing changes.

This is why the cost of universal health insurance makes sense...at least to me. We end up using taxes to care for folks one way or another. Why not do it up front so folks like him stay healthy and continue to work and contribute taxes.

/end rant

Very sad

cant see you getting it with all the scaremongering about 'government takeover' of healthcare and all that sillyness

No, they pay a fortune for private insurance,
Edit. If they can't afford that and can't get on medicaid, they just turn up at the ER when they are really sick. The hospitals won't turn them away but they will bill them, They then can't afford the bills and their credit rating gets screwed. Eventually their debt gets sold to collections agencies.
The idea of Obamacare is to subsidize the cost of private healthcare so people like this dont get screwed but it's tricky in states that don't participate fully. The republican solution would make it even more difficult for people like this to participate in the private healthcare system,

living nightmare

i suspect charities fill the gap quite a bit? but obviously they will have their own agenda particularly religious ones...

Thanks to Reagan, hospitals legally can not turn people away. Again, worst form of healthcare...waiting for people to get seriously ill before guaranteeing help.

The lost money from those that can't pay, is built into all other costs. Part of the reason for high healthcare costs...what others don't pay is passed along to those that can including the US government.

An eminently sensible point. Apologies for repeating myself here, but it is again worth pointing out that the per capita medicaid / medicare costs in the US are higher than the per capita cost of the entire NHS over here.

That's partially due to the fact that there is little in the way of collective bargaining when it comes to medicine or services. The government pays top dollar thanks to lobbyists. If there were a basic public system as opposed to taxes paying for the worst off to use the expensive private system, there could be collective bargaining and a more affordable solution for the tax payers but thanks to the cold war, there is a mental block here when it comes to anything social post the mid 1950's.

except for the military of course. The most expensive bloated social system there is!

Don't doubt it. Part of that is that the government doesn't cap/control costs especially for prescription medications.
A type of insulin in the UK costs around 40 pounds. Exact same thing/quantity in the US is $400.

I don't see how folks don't get this bit...every US citizen ends up on Medicare eventually. If people have had poor healthcare most of their lives, we (tax payers) pay for the consequences.

Don't give a toss about their own voters - showcased in those heated town hall meetings.

People will still vote against their own self interests, mind.

For most of the poor the only way they can get online, short of going to the public library with limited hours, is a smartphone, it is certainly far cheaper than buying a pc and home access. Since the internet provides a while range of information that is not only important in searching/applying for jobs or benefits as well as kids education think it is far more an essential than many suppose. It also means they can save money by ditching an expensive and comparatively useless landline.
I am completely onboard with that. However there are plenty of cheap affordable smart phones that do the job adequately. You don't need an iPhone to get online. Buy a Samsung Galaxy Ace Neo 4 for $50 if you are desperate for money.

See I believe health care is a right, just like education. Would you be fine if he said you should give up your iPhone and save to put your kids through private education because we're shutting all the public schools.
We pay enough in taxes that we should be able to afford a basic public health care system.

Thats not the point though that I was making. Smartphones aren't a right. And if you have money issues, you shouldn't be getting the latest iPhone. To them I would say sort out your priorities and learn to budget.

As I noted, it was a poor example for the politician to use, but I agree with the sentiment - don't complain about money if you are buying luxuries before necessities.

Or buy an iPhone and let your taxes pay for your healthcare

true, if you can't afford an iPhone, don't buy one but health care shouldn't be dependent on how much money you have.
