Or buy an iPhone and let your taxes pay for your healthcare
You are barking up the wrong tree here mate.

I am completely for a free health care system like the NHS (for all of its faults) being implemented in the US.

I agree that taxes should be used for funding healthcare.

I do not agree that there are people who see it as a right to own an iPhone. I guess kudos to Apple's marketing department. You don't have a right to own one. If you can't pay your bills and manage your family effectively, then don't WASTE money on HAVING to purchase the newest iPhone. There are plenty of affordable smartphones out there that do all the same stuff an iPhone does at a fraction of the cost.

my apologies.
I dont think Chaffetz said or meant people had a right to an iPhone. I dont think anyone thinks people have a right to an iPhone. Chaffetz drew a comparison between what he sees as two commercial commodities, not two rights. You threw me when you said you agreed with his sentiment.

I am completely onboard with that. However there are plenty of cheap affordable smart phones that do the job adequately. You don't need an iPhone to get online. Buy a Samsung Galaxy Ace Neo 4 for $50 if you are desperate for money.
Which I agree with but get the feeling his remarks weren't based on "you shouldn't have the latest model" but more directed at "you shouldn't have a smartphone at all", despite a basic smartphone making a lot of sense financially to the working poor. Overall it was a daft example to use, if he'd used something like cable TV he'd have been on much firmer ground.

The frustrating thing is that the CEOs of the health insurance companies all take home salaries of $10m+ a year while people get bent out of shape about people on subsidies. These CEOs rip off the tax payer, buy the politicians and use PR firms to convince republicans that it's the poorest in society that are screwing the country over.
Immigrants aren't screwing this country over.
Refugees aren't screwing this country over.
Environmentalists aren't screwing this country over.
Minorities aren't screwing this country over,
Thats all just a distraction
This country is being screwed over by corporate scumbags who are gradually asset stripping everything to make a quick buck. They are making hay while the sun shines during this administration.

<fhew, rant over, off to a dark corner for me>

That's partially due to the fact that there is little in the way of collective bargaining when it comes to medicine or services. The government pays top dollar thanks to lobbyists. If there were a basic public system as opposed to taxes paying for the worst off to use the expensive private system, there could be collective bargaining and a more affordable solution for the tax payers but thanks to the cold war, there is a mental block here when it comes to anything social post the mid 1950's.

except for the military of course. The most expensive bloated social system there is!

To tack onto two things here (one more relevant than the other) I knew military members who vote GOP who are deathly afraid of their tax dollars being used on illegals or people on welfare, which is why they oppose such programs.

You see, I view it as my duty to pay a bit of money in to ensure people less fortunate than me (including illegals and welfare recipients and drug users - they are all human and they all need help). I have no views on who should and who shouldn't get that money. Just go to the people who need it. Simple as that.

And your reference that the military is the most expensive bloated social system ever....is that referring to the military as a whole, or the military's healthcare setup?

With the exception of schooling and emergency healthcare (ER room) illegal immigrants are not entitled to any welfare/food stamps or other social services. Infact they contribute far more in taxes than what they take out of the system. So, realistically, you're tax dollars are never used to make the life of an illegal immigrant better.

I'm talking about the military as a whole. I have no problem with a strong military but I believe way too much tax payers money is wasted. I also find it ironic that the most ardent fans of the military don't realize it's a socialist program

Haha, the amount of money we get tax free is hilarious. As is the general benefit scheme.

Lets take stock:

Housing - provided or paid for (either barracks or BAH)
Food - provided or paid for (galley or COMRATS)
Healthcare - provided or paid for (on base clinics/hospitals or use Tricare for Private care)

Lets look at the pay.

Pretty much the only thing that is taxable is base pay.

Sea pay, sub pay, hazardous duty pay, BAH, COMRATS and COLA are all tax free. If you re-enlist for a bonus in international waters, the entire amount of that bonus is tax-free.

That is why, when in Hawaii, I could earn close to $100k per year at my rank, but my taxable income was so low that I was considered under the poverty line.

And the GOP military members love it.

I have nothing but respect for you serving, it just drives me mad that I could never mention any of this without being labeled unAmerican

Could I just point out that as my taxable income was below the poverty line, that meant I (well, the wife and kids) were eligible for things like WIC. We never used it as we didn't need too, but that should give one more illustration as to how things are so far out of whack that someone earning that much is still considered eligible for WIC and possibly food stamps.
