So, to sum up this thread, we all believe that Trump is a bit of a lad, that he's just winding everyone up but is right in what he does and will probably be a greater President than that Obama chappie...........I may have had a glass of wine.....
No sorry Pete but the man is a narcissist and a sociopath only concerned with what HE thinks ..pence and co will make sure he's not there in 2020...you should be glad this will happen....:cool:

Fortunately May is a bit more grown up than Corbyn and the visit will go ahead........

Can't disagree with this. I think Corbyn would take a hardline approach against most world leaders who didn't share in his visions and that would be problematic for us and is one of the key problems I have with Corbyn.

No, but why only campaign against the USA........

There are many reasons Pete.

As an influential country in the Western World & a close ally, we don't want to see the USA become prejudiced to the values which are fundamental our unity.

We feel obliged to protest to help those whose lives have been turned upside down by a ridiculous policy (and feel we can make a difference by doing so).

We don't want to promote religious intolerance in the world.

We don't want to see an exacerbation of radicalism in the Middle East.

There's a few things in this. Obama didn't spend months saying he would deny entry to muslims , Trump did. So Trump did not hide what he was going to do, he told everyone and he was voted in, which to me says that America wanted it. In terms of the EO I've already said I think it's a shambles how it was initiated and enacted. As far as I know of American law and politics, and it is very little, I believe that an EO cannot change existing law but can direct government agencies to work in a certain way. I would expect some serious lawsuits to follow if he had done something wrong in law......

The majority of voting Americans did not vote him in. Our electoral college did. The makes him President, but debunks "America wanted it"

Besides it is unconstitutional to base entry into the US on religion...no religious test....regardless of want America wanted unless we change the constitution.

From the actual EO
"...prioritize refugee claims made by individuals on the basis of religious-based persecution, provided that the religion of the individual is a minority religion in the individual’s country of nationality..."

That is a religious test and unconstitutional. Syrian Muslims are being persecuted and killed for not following ISIS doctrine just as any Christian or other religion

Nice one ,, we also dont want to see an increase in hate, intolerance, in Britain.. I myself will argue against "religion" which says we have to "worship" a deity about whom in all religions there is no proof whatsoever... but I respect everyone's personal belief in a better world, and if that involves their own spiritual leanings then that is fine by me.. Long May You Run xxx (Mr Young)

I blame the irony fetish of our times for a lot of people being surprised.

We adore trolling and saying things we don't mean. It's most of our comedy - pushing lines that are really horrifying if you give them thought, but we don't, because we all know that it's just a joke. No one actually believes that stuff, right?

Wrong. There are bad people out there too, and you need to be able to tell the difference between comedy and reality. And we've become very, very bad at telling the difference.

There are way too many Americans with a reality TV/summer blockbuster mindset. Like nothing truly bad can happen in our part of the world and we don't have to take anything seriously and everything is escapism and entertainment, even our politics and government. It's not and it never was and if this doesn't snap them out of their delusion then we are all absolutely doomed.

I think people have fallen into a sense of security.

For all the complaining, the U.S. today (or at least a few months back) was incredibly comfortable and had been for a long time if you were an average American citizen. Our struggles are real, of course, but the Real Bad Things were elements of the past (or rather, more easily ignore-able), but rather than pressing our gains and continuing to push for progress and consolidating our gains, we (like many populations before us) have fallen into apathy and disinterest.

That has allowed a regime to take power that (I truly believe) the vast majority of Americans oppose if they actually pay attention. Whether enough people have started paying attention...whether it has occurred soon enough, or if indeed I'm just being a pessimist, well, we should find out.

I am massively pessimistic and think it's already too late. I insisted our entire family have passports sorted, including our 9-month-old son, as soon as he was elected. I don't know whether they'll actually be of any use, but I'd certainly rather all of us have one than not have one.

This is a very good point. I still need to get the passport for our 16 month old. Also need to make sure the boys have their UK passports sorted as a backup plan for them at least.

But I'm not a pessimist. We can change this. We can stand against it. We have power. We do not need to conform.

My major hope is that people weren't paying attention and this makes them.

Unless I am one of these (possible) the last national civil unrest and a feeling of needing to pay attention was 1970s...Vietnam war. That makes anyone under about 50 blissfully ignorant
