There's actually very few times where context bails Trump out of saying something stupid or awful or both.
This is the kind of thing that is so common now it pretty much goes un noticed.
Unfortunately, due to the system we have here, he's ratings gold. He sells ads. Even for the left leaning networks.

The blatant hypocrisy is the point for the Right. Their aim isn't just to be in power, it's to be so secure in power they can institute "One rule for you and another (or ideally none) for us" policies without anybody being able to do anything about it.
