How exactly do you think he might look after the people who have been left behind?

Or do you think he might have just said that for votes?

I think he is going to follow through on getting a better deal from business for the American people and that his economic protectionism may well result in more or better jobs created or protected.

Freemarket neoliberal globalisation is dead or dying IMO so I am excited to see what happens when someone tries something different

How do you compete with countries with cheaper Labour? Won't the resulting tariffs on products which can't now be now be manufactured in the US cause the prices to skyrocket or actually be heavily subsidised by you the Tax Payer which would result in corporations not only using cheaper offshore labour but reaping the benefits of charging you higher prices AND being subsidised by the you?

Now, I'm no economic mastermind, but to me that seems a James Bond Villain Level Scheme.

I've just read his speech and a lot of you are probably going to hate me for this but I found it pretty good. Looking after the forgotten people that have been left behind seems a good thing to me and though, like Theresa May who has recently been talking in a similar fashion, he will have to take action to ensure this happens it is IMO a good start.

I can see him using his business background and beligerent personality to bully and shame corporations and countries (like China) into acting better in line for the American people than their own corporate interests.

So he is going to think different on the governments relation with business on Nato and Americas relation with the world, attempt to provide more jobs and look after the people left behind.

IMO he is going to really break the mould and not necessarily in a bad way.
"Looking after the forgotten people eh?"

Well pretty much the first thing his administration have done after taking power is to remove a regulation, the effect of which will be to increase mortgage payments for some of the people most in need of assistance.

Champion of the little guy!! Make America Great Again!

I don't know - I'm no economic mastermind either - but I'm curious if protectionism will get better results.

When a country needs infrastructure building say, why not choose an American company that can do the job rather than a cheaper Chinese, say, company?

May work out cheaper in the long run if it lets that American company survive and keep providing jobs and wealth

It's amazing really. People demand manufacturing jobs, good wages, and cheap products. You can only get two out of the three.

Or just get Chinese and Irish slave labour again, that worked before. Those rail roads are still hunky dory. Protectionism belongs to the same era as slave labour. Which Central American country that sounds a little like Texaco is one of the biggest importers or US goods at the moment?

That's the irony of the rust belt. Those union workers earned extortionist wages due to their union affiliation that was meant to protect their jobs.

In the end manufacturing jobs had to leave in order for companies to make an affordable product.

Was reading about a guy in Ohio who was about to be let go due to cut backs. The fella didn't have the most skilled job...he installed brake pads I think. Earned $25/hour...in a part of the world where you can buy a house for the price of a microwave.
