wow @mezzrow too is a Donald fan? damn, together with grinch both are decent posters off politics, really disappointed me.

I don't think so tbh, they just don't like democrats. They would prefer the white house was occupied by a reality tv show host who falls into pots and pans internationally, kills their citizens, destroys their economy and tweets in all caps than have a competent democrat in power. Lib tears must taste very good

Please still love me :(

The word I would use and maybe @mezzrow would to would be disdain.. I dont really think that Trump should be the face of the country, nor the Republican party. I think there are much better faces out there to do so. But he aligns more of where I am at this point in my life. If there was another Republican candidate up I would vote. Biden can still win my vote as we spoke before. Depends on VP pick and if he brings out some policies of what he likes.

To show contrition, one must feel contrite. Trump is a distraction, and his opponents are so blinded by hatred of him they can't see anything else. That's the part you are missing, and it's pointless for me to explain.

Remember, I'm not a progressive and I'm not apologizing for that. Don't sit on a hot stove waiting for it. You're talking to a cranky, stubborn old man.

The roots of our current situation go back to the world order set up at the end of WW2. America has played a role in the world that our populace is no longer willing to sustain until and unless the republic is under existential threat. This is its own subject that can be opened up in its own thread but Trump is the product of this, not the source.

The ability of the usual organs of the media to gin up the existential threat has been enervated since the events of 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the other Forever Wars. The people generating the narrative you consume via media haven't seen that yet, and the filters through which most folks see the world are pretty much unaware of it. If you have felt that America is too involved with the rest of the world, you should be happy with things to come, long term.

America's position at present is much like the Empire at the end of the first Great War.

Here's my advice. Trump is the twenty-first century version of Andrew Jackson. Leave him alone and he'll leave you alone. If you challenge him to a duel, you have to kill him with the first shot or die yourself.
I have no interest in convincing you of the virtues of being a progressive.
All I'm looking for is conservatives (particularly grumpy old white ones) to vociferously come out against Trump. In order to do that, you'd have to show some regret for voting for him in the first place.

I don't want this so I can feel smug but because all the liberal progressive whining/activism/politicking won't change or fix America on it's own.
Conservatives are like addicts at the moment. There'll be no healing till they admit they have a problem on their hands.

I agree, the roots of this go back to WWII which lead to the cold war where McCarthyism and xenophobic propaganda combined with an unrealistic level of national exceptionalism was used to galvanize the American population and excuse the Vietnam draft. Unfortunately the end of the cold war coincided with the 24 hr news cycle and the birth of the internet and the right in America realized the same tactics could be used to keep power in a post cold war America.
Unfortunately, the likes of Gingrich, Ailes, Cheney, the tea party all caused an uncontrollable escalation in this dangerous rhetoric which has resulted in the GOP losing control of it's party and the rise of trump.

All I want is for conservatives, older conservatives to realize that control has been lost and that Trump is bad news for America, and to do something about it.

and how to stop them spreading lies?

Ye don’t. Start going into that territory it’s bad. Can’t believe how low Trump has made the supposed left stoop. Him and his office is a terrible thing but having to defend a neoliberal corporatist in Biden against him now this BS. He’s dragging the bar down instead of a proper left wing reaction.

Hey hey, well done! It's the rare Republican who's willing to state openly that Trump is a thoroughgoing white supremacist. What keeps your fellow conservatives from being so honest?

After all, Trump is the logical outcome of GOP/movement-conservative moves since Barry Goldwater's presidential bid, not an aberration or a distraction but the very essence thereof.

Jay man, gotta stop you there and invoke the Cuco Equation. Hopefully it helps you see that we're not dealing with apples and apples here

So D, I'm seeing a lot of "Well Trump is (insert character deficiency) but so is (insert Democratic politician) and it's simplistic logic that I admit works quite well because;
  1. It's a coherent sentence
  2. It usually has some truth in it
  3. Pulling it apart every time would take too long and derail the thread.
The first and third components of this logic hold up in every circumstance, but it's the second point that warrants closer inspection, as just because it is somewhat true doesn't really tell the whole story. So I have formulated the Cuco Equation which I hope explains what I mean more clearly.

The Cuco Equation
Here are our two subjects:
  1. On the left is Cuco Martina, Everton right-back and possibly the worst professional footballer I can think of.
  2. To his right is Jimmy, a boy born with a rare congenital defect that means he has cucumbers for legs

View attachment 84707

Now, Jimmy doesn't let his disability deter him and his love of football. He plays football all the time and, within the very small sample group of children who have cucumbers for legs, he might even be considered pretty good. But overall, he has worse control than Lukaku, no upper body strength, no accuracy, no pace and any small successes he has on the field are usually facilitated by his loving and supportive friends.

Now at this point, there are two true statements we could make about both Cuco and Jimmy:
  • They both play football
  • They are both terrible at football
The Scenario
So let's say, hypothetically, we're debating who should line out against Manchester United tomorrow, and these were your only two choices for right-back, you could say this to argue Jimmy's case:
"Yeah Jimmy's bad at football, but so is Cuco Martina." This is a true statement

And if you wanted to indicate that you were just taking the middle ground and not overlooking Jimmy's severe defects as a footballer, you could say something like "Our scouting policy is terrible if these are our only two choices", to further shift the conversation elsewhere.

But all joking aside about Cuco's relative merits as a footballer, if we were to line out against Manchester United tomorrow, and give ourselves the best chance of beating them, you would absolutely have to go with Cuco. He's a terrible footballer in the context of professional football, but would still probably be the best player in a league 1 or non-league side. Regardless of what you think of him, he is overwhelmingly more likely to contribute to the game than Jimmy, the boy with cucumbers for legs.

Conclusion
So when you read a sentence like "Yeah, well Trump says stupid things, but so does Joe Biden"; it's true, but severely under-reflects the weighting of how that truth applies to both men. One man is doddery and trips over his words, one tells a population of people to inject themselves with bleach, and it's not even the dumbest thing he has ever said.

Just to be clear, Trump is the boy with cucumbers for legs

Frankly, I'm almost willing to make book here that Biden doesn't make it to November and we see a "modified Torricelli/Lautenburg" of a move sometime this summer. If you believe the polls measure reality and Biden is beating Trump, I'm sure you disagree.

One movie, two stories. BTW, I still have my draft card - I came up in the lottery of 1972 and pulled #346 for my birthday. Lucky me.

Here's an explanation of "one movie, two stories" from Dilbert guy.

Probably best to spend far more of your time criticising the only person who can get him out of office, and those who (while acknowledging his imperfections) would far rather Biden than Trump though, eh? Certainly far more than you spend criticising Trump himself.

Probably best to come up with some stupid made up name for those people while you're at it.

Trump as a person is a worse entity than Biden. He is basic and backward. But Biden is so bad to me. I can’t subscribe to any of it Trump or Biden. I’ve been this way most elections through the decades. Finding me I support of a democrat in Sanders was a rare event. But as many you pointed out “he isn’t really team blue” “he’s just using our party to help the working class”.....

I wish that was so. I wish he wanted to run the Democrats into the ground but as it turns out he is doing what he can to get Biden over the line. Making endorsements with no pressure will campaign for him. Sanders is more like you than me. I wish he was more routeless but I’m going off on a tangent. I just want to bring attention to the system rather than play their game.

Wow. Go with that as an interpretation and see where you get with it.

My point was not that they have the same worldview, far from it. They are the same personality type, and were elected for much the same reasons.
