300 voters (seemingly 150 of each) is woefully inadequate sample.

but more to the point, does this researcher reckon everyone is just gonna be like "yeah, I'm here for the racism"?

Indeed. There are undoubtedly unconscious biases and then biases we're aware of but don't like to admit in public. Still, I thought it was interesting because I don't think it's wise to write off a bunch of the electorate as deplorables. They've got to be reached somehow.

Agreed

The flaw is the main point. Peoples concern with Trump was not immigration. There were many reasons. Immigration certainly was on peoples radar so making that the focal point/question is ultimately flawed.

To echo what you said about racists openly admitting why they voted. Do you think many people would be entirely truthful and admit their real reasons why they vote for something in some random poll. Especially if it made their side look bad.

I definitely didn't write off all Trump voters as deplorables in 2016, friends and colleagues voted for him. There was a general feeling that his behaviour in the run up was just a show, playing up to the media and that he'd definitely shift to the center when elected.
But, now, after almost 3 years, if you're a Trump supporter, I'm fine writing you off, I want nothing to do with you.
I hope the next president governs for the whole country and I hope he or she put programs in place to help with health/education/infrastructure in the MAGA heartland.
but this mess will take a generation to heal. I'm nowhere near being able to tolerate a Trump supporter.

Pretty much this. It’s not massively dissimilar to Brexit. In both cases, falling for it the first time was understandable (just about), but if you’re still on board after everything that is now known, there’s a good chance you’re beyond the reach of reason.

yup, 100%
Where as I thought there was reason to some Brexiteers views, it's quickly boiling down to the same toxic mix of racist, xenophobic nationalism exhibited by Trumps base.

Rather than multiple tweets about the possible high winds that might have at one time been forecast to hit Alabama it would be kinda nice if the president concentrated on the Carolina’s where Dorian currently is or even spared a thought for the firefighters tackling this blaze

Nah sure he will tweet about leafs again and then he will criticize Californian democrats before he acknowledges the hard work done by these guys.
That's a big one. Some friends of mine and some of my wife's cousins have been evacuated they live near there. A lot of San Diegan's moved up that direction and inland because it was cheaper. A fire up there in Riverside county and a little more south is nearly a guarantee nowadays. At least one a year.

Interesting article here.

I've definitely noticed, over the life of this thread, how Trump support has changed/disappeared.
In the run up to the election, early stages of the presidency, there seemed to be a good few people who were in it for the 'chaos'.
As the presidency wore on, it became clear to those that didn't already know, that trump is an idiot.
It's hard to throw your lot in with a moron as it reflects poorly on you.
Maybe Trump support has dried up on here because the task of defending him is hard or maybe the support has dried up because electing an idiot for the sake of shaking up the system isn't worth it.

My sister voted for him...after voting for Clinton over Obama previously .
She was quite celebratory and complementary at first. Gone dead quiet now.

There is no reaching his core supporters. They are lost to reality, critical thinking, and basic scientific and economic principles.
They don’t believe any news source that contradicts their view, demostratable facts are all just faked by the “deep state”, etc. They have become mini me Trumps who believe he can’t be wrong.

It starts out with all policy-voting--"I was just voting for a tax cut"--fair enough; but then as Trump starts to manifest his pestilence, it moves into self-questioning: "who am I as a person to support this guy?"...some stick to their guns and will vote the same in 2020; others will re-evaluate in 2020.

I've never had a problem calling people out on this forum for supporting a racist, sexist, accused-rapist, willfully ignorant, corrupt, bullying narcissist, and all those people have gone silent. Some vote for him, of course, because they openly like to support a racist, sexist, accused-rapist, willfully ignorant, corrupt, bullying narcissist and are too cowardly to defend these "principles" in the face of opposition here on GOT; others because they are selfishly idiotic single-issue voters (i.e., gun control) and can't step outside themselves for a moment to consider what a parent might feel when their child is gun-murdered in a school; others perhaps because they are life-long Republicans with a hard-luck fable about the past-as-better-than-the-present and they just can't deal with change and don't like being lectured to (ain't life tough, ole white guy you?); and...well, those others like your sister, maybe they'll NOT vote this time for a racist, sexist, accused-rapist, willfully ignorant, corrupt, bullying narcissist. There is hope.
