It absolutely is though. The steel, auto, and coal jobs will never be the same. Education is the best solution for these places. Training people to do relevant and current things of importance.

Cities like Pittsburgh have rebounded and are now thriving with new tech and biotech jobs...as an example.
Wouldn’t argue with education and new tech, but don’t just abandon industries that hold up entire communities, which has happened, remember these raw materials are being imported in

Yes, that's the key. We aren't going to be this huge manufacturing country--those days are gone, but Trump keeps beating this "manufacturing jobs" because it plays into his image of 50's America. Don't get me wrong, I have great sympathy for anyone in manufacturing who loses their job, but the world economy is too integrated for the USA to become a massive manufacturer again. We could spend money elsewhere reviving these communities in other job sectors.
No disagree there is lots of room for manufacturing in a modern country, I’d actually say it’s essential too

Remember seeing those pictures of a bunch of guys in a coal mine in West Virginia busting their butts with a pick ax to extract the coal?

1 machine manned by 1 dude is doing all that work now.

It's the same in the manufacturing world.

A capitalist society requires companies to maximize profits.

Yeah going back to the time when my auld fella was a staunch unionist, but remember it was all about it being cheaper produced abroad, we still need this type of hardware

Was part of it, obvs, but there were more nuanced politics behind it. And sustainability issues.

But to take one random example, in Sunderland 40 years ago, it was leave school, down the mine. But tax deals and grants back then now see the most efficient Nissan car plant on the planet there, plus a rather less efficient, Government Tax offices as the main employers.

I think the coal mining is something I was not really getting at, especially seeing I’ve done a stint in oil and gas(renewables by the way wind turbines oh dear the cost but that’s another story) it’s more to with manufacturing side rather than outsourcing it, plus the production of steel which can be produced here and the US, admittedly at a cost of investment, but long term it can be done

When entire communites based their existence around extracting raw materials with a huge labor force they were destined to eventually fade\fail once a machine was made that could replace that labor force.

True but why abandon now at the cost of local communities, when we could slowly introduce the educational side alongside it for a smoother transition?

Think it was 2 yrs ago Norway’s surplus was enough to make every citizen a millionaire

Their Soveriegn (sic) Wealth Fund thing? Yeah, true. Its their savings plan when whatever they sell to the world runs out.

Bit different to the US though.

Tell Norway what?

Point is, getting fixated on a trade surplus in a global, er, world, is in my opinion a pretty blunt instrument, with ramifications.
Well I guess I meant running a surplus of over £1trillion were they are now in the position of ditching its oil and gas industry and spending billions on new renewable alternatives plus it’s a good place to live, even though taxes are quite high, but every citizen is looked after

Just giving an example! Give me an example of a country with a massive trade debt that can do those two major things if it came down to it
