There is a tarrif on EU steel

ok.
So you want a status quo?
Your Happy with a massive trade deficit?
Your happy with outsourcing employment?
He’s trying to do something to reignite dying communities isn’t he and get people back in work?

His "something" won't seem to work. And it is far from clear that a massive trade deficit is actually a problem for the USA. It can be a sign of a vibrant economy.

The do over here too. Not all cars need to be made in Detroit.
Well what’s the problem then? But get some of the old industry fired up again, get them people working again and their kids having a future in their own country were they have something to look forward too rather than a [Poor language removed] hole with no prospects

Trade deficit is not a problem? It goes against everything to do with economics and can generate massive inflation when out of control

Dude...the auto industry in Detroit is still big. It's just not as big as it once was. Primarily because of automation. Take a look at the link below. Most of those auto jobs did not exist when Detroit was at it's peak.

It also causes a reduction in a country internal investment, infrastructure being a big one which can also generate more employment.

A rare foray into this thread for me, but if Trump thinks reopening steel works or car plants long since closed, will actually work, he is living in cloud cuckoo land.

We had that in the UK, steel, mining, ship building, all went west, but the effort was made to reboot the areas into new, more modern economic hubs.

Plenty of views on the rights and wrongs of what happened, but generally, the old industries have been replaced with new ones.

I’ll look through that later. Saw a program in BBC last year showing ghost towns in Detroit due to closures I think from 20 years ago. Pretty depressing to watch

It’s not though is it..

It absolutely is though. The steel, auto, and coal jobs will never be the same. Education is the best solution for these places. Training people to do relevant and current things of importance.

Cities like Pittsburgh have rebounded and are now thriving with new tech and biotech jobs...as an example.

I agree. I think the days of America-as-important-manufacturer have long since passed (way before Obama). And a trade-war with China isn't going to re-open these old factories.

Yeah going back to the time when my auld fella was a staunch unionist, but remember it was all about it being cheaper produced abroad, we still need this type of hardware

Yes, that's the key. We aren't going to be this huge manufacturing country--those days are gone, but Trump keeps beating this "manufacturing jobs" because it plays into his image of 50's America. Don't get me wrong, I have great sympathy for anyone in manufacturing who loses their job, but the world economy is too integrated for the USA to become a massive manufacturer again. We could spend money elsewhere reviving these communities in other job sectors.
