Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

Fairly simple. Trump is desperate for a foreign policy 'win' to come across as presidential and is grasping at this chance to be a 'peacemaker' and show his Korean strategy 'worked'.

Whereas North Korea are playing him for a fool and have in one fell swoop earned legitimacy as a nation state through nuclear blackmail, thereby justifying any rogue nation's nuclear ambitions in the future.

Great.

You can’t give the guy a break can you. NK developed their nukes during previous US administrations, Trump made a power play and NK’s friends in Putin and Xi have told Kim that the guy is a nutter and would actually blow you up. Kim is now meeting Trump and halting missile tests. Like him or not, he has started something that the great Obama didn’t achieve....

I very much doubt, and from what I’ve read and heard, just about every expert on the regime doubts that’s what’s happening though.

I... agree with Trump. Sorry, but I do.

"Diplomacy" has resulted in a very possible rogue nuclear state being developed with no consequence. What's the point in hand-wringing and applying sanctions which China completely ignore when the result is what has already happened.

It's not Trump's fault North Korea can now miniaturise nuclear warheads. That's all on Obama.

Honestly his whole thing about cars being made abroad is very misleading.

Most of the car manufacturers as Ruairi has mentioned are actually made here. In fact the top selling brands are all made in the US.

A lot of the time these companies only import cars when they need to meet special orders or when the demand is too high.

you drive past any commercial business park that has dealers and you will see 100's of cars sitting on their lot.

But putting tariffs on the steel that is used to make them certainly won't help win favour.

Another industry that is going to be hit hard is the production of beer. The breweries are going to be hit big time. Because of demand for beer nowadays they have no choice but to import metal.

The craft beer industry is large nowadays. Some of them have already said they will have to hike prices including the big 3 who own many of the beers on sale here.

Beer should be in glass bottles anyway. Only Americans and hipsters think it is acceptable to drink proper beer out of cans (pish like Fosters being excepted as it is impossible to spoil the taste of that)

You make it sound like a giant concession from the North Koreans to meet rather than a policy goal they have been working towards since Clinton. For that “win” I’d have expected the master negotiator to get something a bit more than a temporary halting of missile tests that can resume at any time.

If I had to choose I prefer this to Trump’s previous stance of sabre-rattling and childish insults (jaw-jaw better than war-war) and negotiations have to begin somewhere but this seems like a very generous first step.

I fully expect that Kim's motivation is to show his regime and the US as nuclear peers. And I'm not particularly excited about that.

But I'm just not sure what would make Trump detractors happy, considering his work to get to this point was considered dangerous, bombastic folly, and now that he's engaging in pretty unprecedented diplomacy he's undermining American resolve and authority. This, of course, coming from the same segments that were happy to praise Kim's sister in an effort to disparage Mike Pence recently.

The situation has shifted and it's not the fault of Trump. Trump didn't accelerate advancement of the NK ICBM program. Past presidents, of both parties, kicked the can down the road and we're getting to a point where that just isn't particularly viable.

I agree the praise of Kim’s sister was stupid but I think you just answered your own question re what would make detractors happy. I doubt you’ll find anyone that doesn’t think negotiations should be held but there is a hell of a difference between starting low level talks, mid level deals or even discussions at ambassadorial level versus Trump meeting Kim.

Diplomatic progress is usually made through a series of small steps that build on each other - Trump has just gone from threatening war to accepting a dinner date without going through any of the intermediate steps and so there is understandable skepticism that this is anything other than political theatre.

In fairness to Trump, decades of incremental efforts have failed to determinatively answer the NK question. I quite truly do not know whether Trump's course is the right one. That said, I think the handwringing about Trump/NK today is 90% the product of people searching for ways to continue the crusade against Trump and 10% legitimate concern.

Agree that it is an incredibly difficult situation and unclear what strategy, if any, will solve it. And I’m open to the idea that the “I’m crazier than you are” power play was at least something that hadn’t been tried before so it might work where previous approaches hadn’t. But tbh that is what I find so bizarre about this latest move - assume for the moment the madman tough guy act has been effective and it has given Kim genuine pause for thought, why abandon it for such transient concessions?

I guess we just all have to keep our fingers crossed that it does just turn out to have been all Trump bashing and the meeting is a productive step towards de-escalation.

Another Supreme Court appointment would be a huge gift to Trump. It's not been confirmed and might just be a Senator fighting for his political life.

===================

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) said in a speech last week he believes Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy will retire this summer, according to audio of the speech obtained by Politico.

“Kennedy is going to retire around sometime early summer,” Heller said in the speech, according to Politico. “Which I’m hoping will get our base a little motivated because right now they’re not very motivated. But I think a new Supreme Court justice will get them motivated.”

Heller is facing a tough GOP primary challenge ahead of the 2018 midterm elections from Las Vegas businessman Danny Tarkanian.
Kennedy’s possible retirement has been rumored for months.

Last June, multiple reports said Kennedy was considering announcing his retirement.

But the 80-year-old justice seemingly quashed those rumors in January when he hired four law clerks for the October term.

Kennedy, who was appointed to the court by President Reagan in 1988, is considered the most pivotal justice on the Supreme Court and is often known for casting the tie-breaking vote in contentious decisions.

While he's among the court's conservative justices, he has sided with his liberal colleagues at times, including on the court's 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

If Kennedy were to retire, it would set up President Trump to fill a second Supreme Court seat after he nominated Neil Gorsuch last year to replace Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016, while President Obama was still in office.

Trump made the appointment of a new conservative justice to the court one of the main promises of his presidential campaign.
