They share a few common ideas, and they stand for similar things. People have had enough of political correctness, of being called racist when they live in the most forward thinking, equal civilisation in the world and are anything but racist. They're fed up of leftist do-gooders being offended on every minority group's behalf, and of free speech coming under attack. They're looking at places which have allowed mass, uncontrolled immigration like Germany, and Malmo (rape capital of Europe), and they're saying no thanks (then, as previously pointed out, they're being called racist for that point of view).

Trump absolutely isn't the man you want handling the nuclear codes, and by and large he seems fairly clueless on policies. But he does represent a reprieve from everything listed above, and clearly the majority feel that they need that.

This is spot on.

Given my age, and knowing a lot of students and (Dare I say it) people from the north-west of England (most of the ones I personally know are very far left), I'm sick to death of all the worry and moaning and crying shame etc.

I get it with brexit to an extent but imo it's just people panicking for the sake of it. Going on and on about something and not accepting any other point of view - the far-lefts are just as bad as the far-rights in that regard.

And as you said, 'political correctness gone mad' is what's led us to this situation in the first place.

People will vote for change. Brexit proved it, and now the most powerful country on earth has proved it, even if the outcome is slightly worrying. Though fgs, in the grand scheme of things, it's all gonna be all right.

Who gets to run the party now, I wonder? Could see the outcome making them every bit as divided as the Republicans. And for them, winning will heal a lot of wounds.

The US effectively a one-party state now, which has happened before, but Trump is uniquely unbeholden
Doesn't really work like that in the US system, does it? They don't really have a 'leader of the opposition'.

London has far and away the most migrants per head of population in the country, followed by other university towns. All voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU, with most inner-London boroughs voting around 70/30 in favour. Likewise, most of the cities in American with the highest proportion of foreign born citizens residing in them voted Democrat.

This isn't those who have exposure to immigrants that are complaining about them but those that don't have exposure to them, so yes, the racist allegation seems perfectly justified to me. It's hard to say how a candidate that called Mexicans rapists and wants to ban Muslims as anything but racist, and that's before you even get onto his misogyny.

We shouldn't confuse basic decency with political correctness.

"I spoke with Freddy O’Brien, a fifth-generation Bleaksviller who operates the bar... I asked him why he disliked Hillary Clinton so much, given that her tax and health care policies would directly benefit his family, whereas Trump had personally pledged to take away his father’s oxygen tank and burn it for sport. “People around here are tired of getting spit on, and Trump gets that,” O’Brien said. “I’m angry. We’re all angry.”

“What are you angry about?” I asked.

“Everything,” he replied.

I couldn’t help but notice that people in Bleaksville are angry.

My suspicions were confirmed when I spoke to Ed Sherman, a sixty-seven-year-old retired teacher who has a thirty-seven-foot-tall sign outside his house that reads “Barack Obama Is A Demogorgon From Hell.” Though he believes that Obama is a secret member of ISIS who has recruited Hillary Clinton to smooth the group’s transition into witchcraft, he insists his support for Trump has nothing to do with race or gender.

“I don’t have a racist bone in my body,” he said. “I don’t care if you’re white, yellow, or colored. I’m just worried about these Muslims forcing Shariah Law on us here in Bleaksville. Trump’s gonna put a stop to that.”

When I pointed out that there wasn’t a single Muslim in the county, he cut me off.

“Trump’s a businessman,” he said. “We’re angry,” he added.

I wanted to hear more, but he explained that David Brooks had scheduled an interview with him to discuss whether he ate dinner with his family every night, and what it means for America."
