You're right. The more I think about it, the more it all seems like a massive overreaction. I don't know the context of his quote, but did a reporter directly ask him about John Stones? Distin probably just answered candidly that Stones is a great player and will one day play for a top side (read: champions league / consistent trophy competitor), and the media latched on to that one bit to make it seem like Distin meant Stones should would be better off leaving right now. Distin expressly said the opposite, that Stones still needs more experience before we can talk about him moving on, but that somehow fell by the wayside in most of the discussion.

I'm honestly embarrassed of myself right now, never trust a headline.

The sad thing is that WE need good players; but they can't be too good, or else they will be too good for us and they will become targets for every club with deep pockets. Distin's probably right. If John Stones isn't gone this window, it's only a matter of time before someone makes an offer we/he can't refuse, and off he goes. We're not "small" club but on the other hand we're sure hell not a rich one either.

The more people build up Stones - the higher his value. So when the club or the player decide it's the right time to go we get the best price.
So Distin is doing us a favour.
Big club?
Not in the sense of being able to compete in the biggest games.
Not with our stadium, Not with our owners, we are a bit of a relic.
We need an overhaul.
