Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

Just found out a friend of mine has committed suicide. Don't know many details about his situation, but wanted to write here that there is always someone you can reach out to for help. We haven't talked in a few years but I'd rather he called me. Maybe sometimes the fact that you can't see a way out just means you need help, not that there isn't any way out.

Take care, -sn

I feel like my stress over my masters' deadlines is starting to have a serious effect on my physical health. Last week I had 6000 words to do in 3 days because I left things late (I get into a cycle of anxiety -> delaying untill I can't delay anymore), with another 4000 word report due on the 1st of June. I've managed to finish the work last week but since then I've felt like my heartbeat is off, sometimes skipping a beat or having a sinking feeling especially at night.

I don't know why I'm feeling these levels of stress because I'm confident in my ability to do the work, but its absolutely crushing me for some reason. I definitely feel it physically more than mentally, because I otherwise feel happy and normal.

Have you spoken to anyone who is a professional about this mate ?

It sounds like stress, but you may want to get that irregular heartbeat looked at and maybe get your blood pressure checked too.

Being stressed and anxious as I think you are mate has a physical effect also. Your mental and physical health are intrinsically linked m8. Have you enquired about extenuating circumstances due to mental stress. Hardly likely to decline your request on those grounds. Try if possible to plan your week. Perhaps 2 or three hours a day for two days and the third day off. I've just had to do a paper on mentorship in mental health. Went back to it after 2 days and reviewed what I'd written. Horrible ! You need a break from academia Zezti because I think so it's subjective, the quality of your work suffers if it's all enveloping. Ask for extenuating circumstances on your deadline buddy, they may be sympathetic. Good luck my friend.

Hi everyone
I've never posted here before, and never contributed, but I just wanted to congratulate you / GOT forum for setting this up, and all of you for talking so openly about this. It's a fantastic resource, and to take place at the top of a football forum is really commendable.
I'm the type of person who likes to share and leave myself like an open book, but have bottled up my feelings and thoughts in recent times, so I might come back and share if I can.

Thank you!

I think it was doing an all-nighter, on top of very large amounts of caffeine that may have done it. Still stressed, but not feeling that heartbeat thing for the past few days. If I feel it again I might get an appointment. First thing I want to try is just removing the source of the stress.

I've already used self-certified claims for ext. circumstances a couple times this year. Doing so again would lead to some kind of meeting that I just don't want to deal with. I think I can manage this one. Although its 4000 words its just 10% of the grade for my dissertation (due in Sept) so not the end of the world if it isn't up to a great standard.
This Masters course has been stressful for many of my peers too. I was chosen as course rep for my cohort so they've come to me several times asking to anonymously feedback things where the uni have let slip and caused more unnecessary stress. Just yesterday we got some (month late) results, which were worked out incorrectly but thankfully one of my peers spotted it and told me so I could correct the professor (3% difference!). But its little things like that, that over the months have added up and has added to stress we've experienced. so you're right in that I need a break. Can't wait to lay back and watch the euros without thinking about it. People recently have asked if I'm going to do a PhD, I just lol in return.

Sorry to hear that mate. Any specific trigger for it you care to share or just life in general?

LL, I’m usually low low during the week and perk up for the week when I’m expected to socialise. Nowadays I’m so low during the week whenever I try perk up for a weekend nothing changes and still low. Slowly dragging myself till on the end.

No sympathy required I’m usually a nob on here.

Is there anything recently that has changed that accounts for the shift? If not Covid has forced a lot of stresses on everyone over the past year or so and that might just be catching up with you.

Have you considered talking to professional about it, they might be able to narrow down the cause and thus suggest some solutions for it. We all have our nobbish moments, doesn’t mean that people don’t care about you or want to help make you happier x

Well my nana passed last month but I thought I'd dealt with that but maybe it's still there. I'm booked in with my local counselling spot next week and swearing off alcohol for a while too (seems to just cause more hassle). Thanks for the support.

Glad to hear you have got an appointment and skipping alcohol seems wise, hope both bring an improvement but if you need to talk in the meantime please don’t hesitate x

Keep your chin up lad - know we haven't seen eye to eye at times over the years but we are all Blues and should be looking out for one another - very easy to forget on here that everyone behind the username is a real person each dealing with their own struggles.

Sounds like you need to pinpoint what you aint happy with in life and make the right changes.
