Surely it can’t cost too much to hire a defensive coach that knows how to organise a team to defend set pieces? A few days worth of Schneiderlin’s salary could probably pay for it.

First of all the high line is ridiculous.
Our slow defenders ends up running towards goal while trying to head to ball clear in the opposite direction the ball flew from while “defending” his zone and at the same time react within split second any opposing players running towards goal with a running jump which is going to be a massive advantage.

Well done Marco.
Everyone does that in set up. No one was running backward when the ball was struck.

Not sure if true but it wouldnt surprise me

For me it doesn't all fall on the fact we use zonal marking. Zonal marking works when done correctly. Silva certainly needs to be asking questions of his coaching staff and if loyalty prevents him from making a change then the club should step in and hire a coach who is a specialist that can help Silva and his staff. It can't just be that all the players are gash and zonal marking just doesn't work.

The most amazing thing about this thread is that it was started on the 25th August 2018 i.e when it was already very clear that we had a serious problem defending set pieces and here we are over 5 months later and with a lot of humiliation under our belts with the exact same problem that has and still is damaging us every single game.

Unforgivable that the Manager still hasn't fixed it in that length of time tbh. Very poor management but then again it is a problem that has followed him around well before he came to Everton so maybe we are expecting a bit too much for him to fix something that he just isn't either capable of or interested in fixing. It has certainly got nothing to do with transition or teething issues regardless.

He's got two weeks after the Watford game to work on it with all the players before we play Cardiff and the rs. None of this going away for 'warm weather' training please, get back to basics and learn to defend.

He has had 5 months to work on the system and change how the players lineup within it, that's all we need to do. Zonal marking is not the problem, its a clever system when employed properly as anyone with any basic coaching knowledge will tell you, also most of the top teams in europe including RS and City within our league use it too defend. Our problem from day one has been how the players are setting up within the system and since then Silva has shown little sign of changing the lineup. There have been odd times when we have done both zonal with some man to man on the posts, but that just seems to cause major confusion and also i have noticed with that that we end up with Coleman and Digne doing the man to man on the posts which is not great against giant CB's, hence what i said about not setting up properly. I think it will only get sorted if someone from outside comes in to help, no idea who but i don't see Silva or his staff sorting this problem out.
