David Unsworth - Temporary Manager

So happy for him. It seems he did have full support, was always happy to carry on and wanted the job. He wasn’t thrown under the bus. He carried on under very difficult circumstances. The European games got in the way of the league form and tactics. He has learnt a lot here. He will go back and assess and rest. A good way to end a torrid few weeks. When done Rhino.

Buzzing with the win, I genuinely am, but need to have a vent about out True Blue Unsworth. As I put in other thread:

What are we thanking him for? For being the Terry Connor, Ricky Sbragia, Brian Kidd for us?

Lovely feller, but let's not get carried away: he hasn't saved us from certain relegation, he hasn't won us a cup, but he has overseen some of the most embarrassing and humiliating performances and results in recent memory. And that is saying something with our record.

Imagine Taking over a struggling side: First thing I need to do is alienate our only form player, Vlasic, and NEVER EVER start him, regardless.

Need a win in Lyon? Sound, let's play an attacking midfielder with no pace (who I usually play inexplicably on the wing) as a LONE striker. That will win us the game.

Let's send two utter disrespectful d!ckheads home from training, and then bring them straight back into the team because I need to be everyone's mate, laughing, joking and arm round the shoulder of everyone.

Let's bomb out players who haven't completed TWO premier league games, like Klaassen and Sandro, lads lacking in confidence, needing nurturing coming to a new league.

Let's go to Southampton who have scored 9 all season and gift them four goals, and pose no attacking threat, all while still playing phonies like Schneiderlin and Mirallas.

Let's keep playing Calvert Lewin, a lad who has about as good a goal ratio as Tony Hibbert up front. Leon Osman's record is probably better, without even looking. But keep playing him, because I need to be seen as a paragon of youth development.

And above all: mention the fans, mention the club, mention the chairman. Praise how good the fans are you disrespected with your midfielder up front away to Lyon in a must win game, and show how shocked you are when absolutely feeble managers like Pellegrino outthink and outclass you.

Let's get our pants pulled down by a mid table Italian side, who haven't won a SINGLE game in two months, put a kid on for his debut, out of position, mid-rape, and condemn us to our worst result in Our proud European history.

Let's be a top BLUE, who gets us.

Thank you so much. Thanks for getting an incredibly lucky chance at the best job in the world.

Come at me.

Weird.

Try forgetting the cup and European results. His remit was the league. Yes Sunday against Southampton, was about the worst performance I can remember. But he got 7 points out of 9, with no time between matches for real time on the training pitch. He took over a team with no confidence. Then took some ridiculous stick, from the media. I think he did quite well.

Grateful for him stepping in and taking responsibility during this period. A great representative for the club and let's hope he goes back and continues the excellent work he's done for the U23's and continues to aid the development of our young talent.

However, I think some are getting carried away. Unsworth was very very poor as Everton manager. Some of his selections were baffling and he got lucky last night when Pickford saved the penalty. We were getting overrun by a shocking West Ham side and he wouldn't change it. We needed those exact 3 players on sooner. Davies was getting bypassed regularly and Baningime should have been on far sooner. Bringing on Lookman/Vlasic earlier would have put West Ham under pressure instead of them coming at us. He clearly didn't learn from the mistakes of Sunday where Southampton played it round us with ease but were far better than West Ham were. It was good to see Sigurdsson more disciplined on the left though and thought he stuck to his job well when he got overrun on Sunday out there while Baines was on.

Clearly the 8 substandard and zero standard performances the players managed - with a smaller injury list I might add - under Perplexed Ronnie - have been completely forgotten by some.

Chelsea 0-2
Spurs 0-3
Atalanta 0-3
Man U 0-4
Burnley 0-1
Lyon 1-2
Arsenal 2-5
Brighton 1-1

And of course the draw with Apollon

That was 2/3rds of the games against top line opposition. We scrambled a win over Stoke, fluked a win over Bournemouth and put in a good shift at City. But apart from the Oumar inspired win over Bournemouth we were terrible from late August onwards..

I'd love to know how David Usworth was to blame for that and how, having managed parity with 2 wins a draw and 2 losses his credentials have been damaged.

Last night shouldn't be his last game anyway, he should be allowed to take a shadow squad to Limassol and BFS stays behind and works with the first team for the derby.

Pretty soon the result will fade into history, but at the moment it’s our best result of the season , not only for the scoreboard but the way we played. And let’s not forget the background, our first choice back four out injured, our then top goalscorer not available. His availability at the back was a 20 year old right back, a CB just turned 21 , an out of form and out of confidence Williams and as left back Martina who is unable to do much with his left foot . To win with a clean sheet was an impressive one off result.

At times we had five across midfield, Davies was sometimes ahead of Lennon , Rooney behind Siggi etc and it worked . The most disappointing thing about Unsy’s reign for me was his inability to establish a sound defence , something he’d made his reputation on at U23s despite continually having to change players. It didn’t work for him until last night and I’m made up for him that we got a clean sheet all be it thanks to Pickford’s save but it was achieved. Sometimes Managers , like players, need time to grow and develop at a higher level e.g Kenny, and I’m sure Unsworth will have learned a lot from this experience , maybe he needed more time but we just couldn’t afford to give him that time after the performance at Southampton. He’ll continue to be a great servant of our Club, good luck to him back in his previous roles.

Not a terrible idea. Take the U23s and go batter the Cypriots. Let our manager have his wicked way with the first team.

Moved us from 18th to 13th over how many, 5 games, the red button was pressed too soon and the answer that popped up in Allardyce was the wrong one. But hey ho, we are where we are, let’s see Sam move us a similar number of positions by January.......

West Ham really are in trouble.

Maybe we could steal Lanzini of them when they go down.

His league results were decent. 2-1-1. That's above average for us.

The cup games were gimmes that frankly I'm sure he could have done without.

However the team looked completely different with Big Sam watching. I think he couldn't motivate the senior players although at least he kept playing Sigurdsson who has now played himself into a bit of form. Above all else that may be his most important contribution.

we were rubbish when he took over and think only two of his games were at home , wasn't great but he was there when the club needed him and gave his best cant ask for more, top man
Even when those same fans were slagging him off too.

Probably not up to managing a top flight team but nobody can doubt his effort and passion, quite why some on here feel it's justified to aim so much bile in his direction I have no idea, blame the parents.
