2025/26 David Moyes

I don't know how anyone can really argue it's in spite of him?

I'd love to hear the reasoning behind that.
Probably the thought that this squad should be doing better than it is.

Is Moyes safety first approach holding us back?

Haa Moyes managed to change a game to our advantage? We're one of only 3 teams yet to have a goal scored by a substitute.

I don't keep up with much footy outside of Everton these days so I have no idea who would be a candidate.

Loads on here fancied Thomas Frank, Graham Potter, or Eddie Howe and they've not really been that great. There's so little guaranteed with any manager change that unless he warrants the sack for underperformance I can't see it happening.

Who are the managers people would want Moyes sacked for? Does anyone have names to put forward?

I just keep reading "The Friedkin's will sack him if he doesn't get top half and a cup run" and I'm not sure it's that simple.
I don't think anyone has any idea what the Friedkins will do, they seem a pretty inscrutable bunch and never so much as utter a word in public. So I'm certainly not one of those who would profess to know what's going to happen or what minimum expectations are. That being said, I would be horribly disappointed if we bomb out of both cups early and finish at or below where Dyche had us in the league but that's a personal opinion not inside info.
All new managers come with risk, Emery was underwhelming at Arsenal and has been incredibly impressive at Villa. Football is a weird sort of alchemy. Any name I, or anyone else, would suggest will split opinion and wouldn't be of any consequence anyway as it's the online equivalent of chat down the pub.
I suppose my main point is that, at 62 years old and with a limited history of success (at least in terms of trophies won), Moyes isn't a long term appointment and sooner or later we will have to replace him. If a decent option for that emerges in the summer then so be it.

Why do you think it should be doing any better than it is?

It has so far improved on last year with only two of the signings made this summer having had any real impact so far.

At the start of today his team is level with Newcastle who have a much more valuable squad than we do. We are above Tottenham who have the manager loads wanted.

Who do we have a better squad than that's ahead of us in the league? Sunderland?

It's not better than FA Cup winning Palace or every player is worth 100 million Brighton. It's not better than City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa, Chelsea, or even United's.

How many teams should this squad realistically be expected to be finishing above?

I think people forget they were happy to persist with Dyche until HE came begging for the sack and a pay off. When given the choice they went with Moyes.

All of that tells me a lot about their current ambition and we are just 12 months off of that.

Yeah, I'm not totally sold on the Friedkins. Some people on here are all in on them, just like people were for Moshiri and Usmanov for the first couple of years, but I'm not sure what their goals are here. There's a lot of money to be made from the premier league and, my guess is, that that is their main motivation here, it's not like they're fans or have any prior connection to the club or the area. They spent some money in the summer, however, so who knows, maybe they do want to make us competitive again, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were quite comfortable with us being a mid-table team. In which case I wouldn't be surprised to see a contract extension for Moyes. This is all supposition on my part, however, and I guess we'll have a better idea 18 months from now what their plan is. Actions, and outcomes, are always a better measure than statements.

Is this true? That's quite a remarkable stat at the halfway point of the season.

We have a better starting 11 than we have had for a while, but the squad may not be fixed for another 2/3 transfer windows. The starting 11 hasn't even been completely fixed yet.

Also, does a player need to directly score or assist to have an effect? It would be nice to see those stats and it would be nice to have a bench that can regularly change a game, or add to whatever is already there directly or indirectly. Hopefully it will come but we do have to be patient, as a fan base.

I guess a more important stat would be how games have been changed by subs, rather than solely by goals from them. Have we gone on to win games we were drawing, have we got draws from losing positions (and vice versa)?

The stats for these things might also be poor but goals scored alone doesn’t really tell you much, especially when both strikers are failing to score regardless of game circumstance.
