2025/26 David Moyes

Before Everton make their plans for next season I really hope they do an in-depth analysis of this season. We have definitely improved during David Moyes’ second tenure, we are no longer looking over our shoulder at relegation, a great relief to all. However, I have mentioned as have others, about Moyes having a glass ceiling. The type of risk averse football he plays can only get you so far. My thoughts were that Moyes would probably see a bit more improvement in the team next year but he would level out around 7/8th place.
A look at this year’s table in comparison with last season may indicate that he has already hit that glass ceiling, we finished 13th with 48 points in the previous season and 13th with 49 points this season. I don’t consider that to be a significant step forward particularly when you factor in new players. I accept that a centre forward who could have scored a few more goals would have made a difference but we spent a significant fee on a centre forward who hasn’t really contributed much. We spent a lot on a winger who contributes next to nothing.
The feel good factor that David Moyes has engendered appears to be clouding the facts, yes we are all happy that we start well enough to not be in and around the bottom 3 but are we mistaking the feel good factor for progress.

I’d like @Bedfordblue to confirm from his source if he wouldn’t mind, those are from AI and the Wolves ones look a tad low so I’d like confirmation from a more reputable source!
From Statsmuse - although not sure of its veracity tbh, just the first google result from ‘Most EPL points since Jan 2025’
On closer inspection it’s from 31st Jan so a few games missing for the month of Jan 25.
Moyes was appointed on 11th Jan iirc.

This one says from 1st Jan 25, but cba validating.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I think the time spent on punditry over a 5 week competition rather than taking a proper rest and then working on Everton tactics and transfers, especially given he refuses to work with a DOF, will be detrimental to Everton.

But as you say it is all opinions!
He wants the holidays of a coach but the control of a DOF
Bet he'll take more time off than Arteta this summer who has a lot less to fix and easier transfers to make

https://www.statmuse.com/fc/ask/premier-league-clubs-most-points-since-december-2025 you can use this (from dec. 31 onwards) which is quite dire I'd say.

Matchday 20 (first day(s) of January):
Everton - 28 points
West Ham - 14 points

Matchday 38:
Everton - 49 (+21)
West Ham - 39 (+25)

….bit of talk in the transfer thread about how we’re losing ground on other clubs around us. The reality might be a bit different when comparing last seasons totals with this for the clubs finishing above us;

The top 3, Arsenal, City and United have increased the gap to us.
Aston Villa; we’re 2 points closer
RS; we’re 25 points closer
Bournemouth; the point gap between us is the same.
Brighton; we’re 9 points closer.
Brentford; we’re 4 points closer.
Chelsea; we’re 18 points closer.
Fulham; we’re 3 points closer.
Newcastle; we’re 18 points closer.

This creates a narrative that we are closer because of the gains we have made rather than the drop off they've had. We only have one point more than last season.

But we literally haven't moved. Everyone above us but Bournemouth regressed.

Unless you're spinning standing still as a positive in that environment?

Stability.

Letting other managers dictate what he should do with his own players.

Laughing at selling our birthright.

Compare and contrast: can you imagine Alex Ferguson laughing whilst recounting the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Florentino Perez and Real Madrid?

Nope, neither can I. That's because it was an imposition on a proud club custodian like Ferguson. Losing Rooney is a joke to Moyes. He saw that as normal... And for Kenwright's Everton, it was. But never forget: Moyes was Kenwright's placeman. In place to manage the decline.

….this regime has had one summer window and even then two of the key recruiters were not in place. We’re generally closer to the clubs who finished above us yet you don’t see that as us progressing, you see that as all of them regressing .

Bournemouth under super Iraola the only club progressing but the points gap between us and them is exactly the same

I understand posters love a ‘handle’ to hang on, so ‘stability’ is the word. The reality might be a bit different, certainly be an interesting window to see if we continue this rate of progression next ;)

He bragged in his office in that infamous blue union interview/meeting about how a great deal it was for Everton.

I was sick personally, seeing him leave so early, the kid with the “thank you for Rooney” sign, urgh
