Before Everton make their plans for next season I really hope they do an in-depth analysis of this season. We have definitely improved during David Moyes’ second tenure, we are no longer looking over our shoulder at relegation, a great relief to all. However, I have mentioned as have others, about Moyes having a glass ceiling. The type of risk averse football he plays can only get you so far. My thoughts were that Moyes would probably see a bit more improvement in the team next year but he would level out around 7/8th place.
A look at this year’s table in comparison with last season may indicate that he has already hit that glass ceiling, we finished 13th with 48 points in the previous season and 13th with 49 points this season. I don’t consider that to be a significant step forward particularly when you factor in new players. I accept that a centre forward who could have scored a few more goals would have made a difference but we spent a significant fee on a centre forward who hasn’t really contributed much. We spent a lot on a winger who contributes next to nothing.
The feel good factor that David Moyes has engendered appears to be clouding the facts, yes we are all happy that we start well enough to not be in and around the bottom 3 but are we mistaking the feel good factor for progress.
