2025/26 David Moyes

"If you actually look at what went on"

They were my closest football team mate when he was there/he relegated them - so I was pretty close to it with local media, you was in another country.

Ask a Sunderland fan what they think of him. They'll tell you what went on.
Fair enough, but a lot of Sunderland fans also recognise the mess the club was in at the time. They were cutting costs so much they wouldn’t let the players use the cryogenic chamber to save a few quid.

By the end, everyone was fed up.

Goodison had thousands of empty seats every game. It was dour. The dampening of expectations could only be handled so many times.

No one is disputing his effort in turning round the fortunes. But his spell bar 5 seasons was dour.

11 seasons. No trophies.
His last season we played great football and were challenging for top four.

Played for Sunderland mate. Moyes paid £20m for him? Didn't put a relegation clause in his contract and they went down.

More my point was he had spent
Money at Sunderland 😂
Sunderland signed N’Dong over M’Villa despite the latter being much better and actually having performed to a very high standard for the club as his wages were much higher. N’Dong was signed as the installments were spread over a much longer period (less money up front) and as he was on relatively paltry wages.

He like a magnet for mid table, he took the PL champs down to 7th then they got rid before they got tuck in the Moyes zone.

We also forgetting Real Sociedad were he got punted after a year. 12 wins 15 draws 15 defeats.

I know - every style of play is ultimately limited by the quality of the players trying to put it into effect.

This is absolute rubbish mate.

Managers have default styles and tactics. Not many out there are flexible. Even the best managers struggle at clubs as they wont change their default.

This is Moyes default. People said the same about Dyche and he went to Forest with much better attacking players than us and Burnley had and he played exactly the same dull, defence first, conservative football he always has. Look at the difference under Pereira, its quick, fast paced and fluid.

Moyes could take over that City side and it would be a totally different watch.

He done what we needed at the time but football has moved on and we need to move with it.

That’s the curates egg thing. You can make good arguments either way, I’d say. At the end of the day, if he cannot make tangible progress next season he’ll be heading elsewhere.

His last season was the polar opposite to how we typically played.

Started off great, the tailed off when he got interest from United. I remember going to Swansea and it was great.

But there was various games where everyone just couldn't be bothered.

People just seem to forget about it. Was a dire period.

Think you're overegging it a bit.

That season we bid £20m+ for their crap centre half, name escapes me, who was getting pictures with Evertonians desperate for a move. Moyes wouldn't sell him to Everton.

Big money at the time and more than what they paid for their club record transfer that same summer.

They should have sold him if they were that skint. I think they ended up loaning him out.

I think Moyes was a bit cut nose to spite face with it. I honestly think he will be glad to see West Ham go down this weekend because it adds to his own PR.

"Look at West Ham"

Spurs and Chelsea will be better next year. Bournemouth, Brighton and potentially Brentford will have Europe next year. Palace may have Europe next year.

And we will be stuck in the 30+ year old discount ‘experienced’ bin for players. We will be badly left behind.

10 games into next season when it inevitably goes tits up and we move him on, it’ll just be ANOTHER firefighter brought in to ‘stablise’ us

Rinse and repeat.

We have a chance to actually make a proactive change now, whilst options are available and time is there to let them bed.

But we won’t.

Do you REALLY see progress and enough to merit him staying on, when you've got Glasner & Iraola right there to be hired?

Do we have to be reactive? Can't we be pro-active for the first time in my lifetime?

You do have good points. My only argument is the “football has moved on” bit. If we want to be a bit more expansive and play like Bournemouth it makes sense to try for Iraola. But I don’t think the more compact and counter-heavy approach of Moyes is outdated really. If anything, you’ve seen a swing to that direction as people try to counter the more possession heavy style.
