It’s not really a debate that’s settled by game to game results
It’s a question of where you think we are on a hopefully upward curve and what manager is needed for the job at hand.
Dyche was the correct appointment in Jan 23 to keep us above the dotted line until the club ownership changed.
Moyes was the correct appointment to move us up the table and provide some immediate football leadership when Thelwell exited and a new team was being put in place.
There’s probably three schools of thought now, one which sees the squad as still not really good enough to move us away from a relegation battle for good and therefore want another year of ‘stability’ before another manager comes is, one which sees
Moyes as a manager capable of further progression and winning trophies if given the right financial backing, then there’s one that sees Moyes as never being able to get across the line and mid table this season is enough stability to hand to another manager.
TBH I don’t really know what camp I’m in. I look at Keane Gana McNeil
Mykolenko all still in the team. and not a decent striker or fullback to be seen, and worry that they and others have form for just throwing in relegation level performances when it suits. Spurs and Leicester before them really are stark reminders that even decent squads can go down once tools have been downed and some of that lot above have form when they’re not being micromanaged by pragmatic defensive managers. I would like to see the squad have enough firepower in it so you could be assured that if we ever got a managerial change wrong that the squad would have enough goals for a new manager to pick it up and we’d be ok. It’s certainly not there yet.
In his first tenure with us I certainly thought he could win trophies and take us into Europe if he was given more financial backing as he was working miracles on a shoestring. So part of me is tempted to go all in on him in the summer, contract extension, big war chest and see if he can iron out the problems from this season and push us on. If we’re in the conference league why couldn’t he win it again given his experience?
Then there’s another part of me which thinks I’ve watched him fail to get over the line with us so many times that maybe it’s better just to hire the best manager we can like Villa and Palace did and give them the transfer funds.
I don’t think anything we see this season will answer that to be honest. Wouldn’t surprise me if we finished strongly and qualified for Europe, wouldn’t surprise me if we finished 12th, either of those doesn’t change the decision for the Friedkins this summer really.
