People are allowed to criticise and still support the club. Also if you don’t analyse things, then things will never improve. That goes for all walks of life. If they accept we’re safe, we win more than a third of our games, stop moaning, then we won’t understand what’s needed to push on.
Did I read correct, that Moyes admitted he’d have been happy with a point before the game? I think that sums up his mindset and it’s why for games like Brighton and Fulham, fans get annoyed with team selections, because he is clearly playing to not get beat, whereas we as fans feel that the win is there for the taking.
The team can clearly play on the front foot when we are behind, but we seem unable to do, before going behind. Having said that we started the game well yesterday, and for maybe 10 mins it seemed we were the better side, but Fulham grew in to the game and with better finishing would have been out of sight at half time. So that suggests to me it’s maybe not a motivational issue, but a tactical one, so once Fulham were able to get a hold of the game they were clearly on top tactically.
Same happened at Brighton second half, we came out all guns firing, created chances, and they looked wide open, KDH missed that chance and then they went and scored and we fell apart completely and couldn’t get going. Snatching it at the end when we gambled.
Moyes is like a big step up from dyche and alladyce. He sets the team up not to concede and as long as you have some good players in the side then you’ve got a chance at scoring. I always feel his teams need to work hard to score goals.
The bit I’m struggling to understand is that we look much more solid without Gueye and Keane. Gueye seems to have a free role and pops up all over the pitch like it’s his testimonial, but he leaves big gaps in the midfield. I’m honestly not sure what his role is supposed to be, because when he doesn’t play the replacement doesn’t do the same thing. Garner has to cover a lot more defensively when Gueye is in the side. Garner has been one of, it not our best player this season, so to lose some of his impact for Gueye makes no sense.
When Keane plays we look wide open at the back. He’s got no agility and is too slow to move his feet, so he’s slow to react. Tarkowski seems slow as well, so when the two of them play, strikers run off the shoulder constantly as neither will recover, so if it’s a good ball they’re in. If JOB or Branthwaite play, they’re more mobile, quicker to react and also quicker to close the gaps before they widen. JOB has shown he should be first choice (while JB was out) but he’s the one who keeps being moved. I feel Tarkowski gets the nod for leadership, but I’d still rather the two giants were playing when available.
That’s the bit I don’t understand with Moyes, he prides himself on setting up a solid side, tough to break down which will work hard, but he bends over backwards to include two players who don’t fit this system. I thought the Villa game would have given a hint at what a more mobile side can achieve, but he changed it straight after and I don’t think we’ve seen Rohl since either.
We know what we’ll get with Moyes, but we also know what we won’t get. Without that hope it’s difficult to get behind him longer term. It’ll be a brave decision to change him, and I fully expect to see him see out his contract at least, but in the meantime if he had a bit more confidence in the side then I think we could push on more. Our first 11 - bar the full backs - is the best we’ve had for a while now.
