2025/26 David Moyes

Well said. The precious, much-revered 'experienced' players are allowed to make as many errors as they like, while young players and new signings are punished with exclusion. It should be completely the opposite.
This is why I never by the argument "the manager sees them in training".
As if manager are infallible or can't play favorites.
We've seen it happen time and time again. Benitez got rid of Digne. Lampard sat Doucoure. Dych kept Branthwaite out until he couldn't, and then did the same to O'Brien.
Managers are just people and most of them seem to be incredibly hard headed and almost incapable of admitting they got it wrong.

I don't fully fathom the season is over comments the table is still extremely tight and we're still only off the top spots by a couple of points , the last two matches have been disappointing but there's still a possibility we can finish in the top half especially with some of our more skilled players set to return. Moyes needs to become aware of his detrimental patterns such as favoring the same failing players and we could still be in contention for top half finish
He wont though mate will he? He never has, it’s his way or the highway. He has done a great job since he came, but as always he is regressing, the football is becoming ever more slow, predictable and drab. For all those spouting about Afcon, I would remind you that Sunderland has lost 6 players to that competition and still look a fitter, faster and more entertaining outfit than we do.

Have a look at their form since their players went to the AFCON.

It’s almost identical to ours in the way it’s tailed off.

They were a good few points ahead of us and now they’re ahead by one point.

The AFCON has most definitely had a negative effect on teams with smaller squads, who are very reliant on key players like us and them.

I drink with two Sunderland lads and they predicted that this is exactly what would happen at this stage of the season.

You also have to remember, that they’re players are playing with much less expectation than ours, as survival was / is their only goal and they’ve as good as achieved that.

I just don’t understand why McNeil Keane Tarkowksi Mykolenko O’Brien Gana can make whatever silly errors they want. Grealish did a stupid back heel on his own goal line v Wolves then gets sent off for dissent. We’ve had hair pulls, handballs, back passes, careless playing out, mis timed lunges, hitting your own player, having zero positional sense, chasing the ball like a school boy, and aimless running down blind alleyways. That’s all fine apparently.

But the second Dibling loses the ball, it’s all this over exasperated heads in hands and arms up from the manager followed by him getting hooked at half time. Alcaraz is just generally not liked for no known reason as he seems a hard worker who always tries even when not playing well. Patterson is met with utter revilement every time he’s mentioned. Barry is spoken about like he wasn’t signed by the manager, and Aznou is spoken about like he isn’t even a footballer. Rohl has gone from well liked to behind Armstrong after one bad game. Meanwhile we have kids on the bench who are clearly never going to play a single minute for us.

We have two fullbacks at the club in Patterson and Aznou who effectively won’t be used by the manager despite us having a massive fullback issue. God forbid we played Patterson at right back or even tried Aznou there when we can just stick with a known liability in O’Brien instead.

We have two midfielders in Rohl and Alcaraz both bought in the summer neither of whom the manager trusts as first choice.

We have a 40 mill pound wide player that the manager doesn’t like

Plus two strikers for a combined worth of 50 mill plus and Moyes actually likes the one he didn’t buy that the club would actually like to move on but is seemingly being forced to play the one we spent a ton on in the summer.

It’s a bit ridiculous. Managers should maximise the resources they have. It was stupid of Dyche to keep O’Brien on the bench and it’s stupid what Moyes is doing now. Players make mistakes, at least young ones have a chance to develop from them and learn from them. The senior players I’ve listed will just keep making them and will make more and more as they get older and slower.

Sounds like he thinks Europe is now impossible and maybe wont be something we see going forward. That 8th or 9th may be the max.

Then reiterates how he didnt spent money 12months ago. This clearly a benefit in his eyes like under Kenwright...

...oh i didnt spend money even though Thelwell had 2 full backs lined up.

Now hes acting how we should see him in a better light for that? What an utter stupid comment...YET AGAIN !!!

Blah blah blah Everton fans are great...blah blah blah. The man is talking nonsense.

3pts off Europe. Those are his thoughts and quotes.

Hardly a motivator is he?

I don’t dispute anything you have said mate, but I stand by my point that despite losing the six players, and despite dropping points, they still look fitter, faster and more entertaining than we do.

I don’t know mate, as I’ve never really watched them, but if you’re basing it on highlights, even we can be made to look good on the likes of Match of the Day 😂

The reality is the top 6, Newcastle and Villa all on paper have much better deeper squads than us. Some of them have better managers as well. So in theory he’s not wrong to say that the future might be 8th or 9th without sustained investment in the squad.

I am a big believer that the most sure fire way to get to the top is to give an Everton manager a squad that is good enough to be there. If we want champions league football, give him the 4th best squad. But we don’t we give managers the 13th best squad and then ask them to get Europe.

All of that aside, the best managers still take advantage of opportunities. Leicester didn’t have the best squad when they won the league, Conte won a league at Chelsea before Guardiola and Klopp got going, Pellegrini and Rodgers battled out for one as Chelsea and United were in disarray. In previous seasons Newcastle and Villa have all walked through that gap to get CL football and Palace and Forest achieved Europe and an FA Cup.

So if the door is there I expect an Everton manager to at least try and walk through it but too often Moyes doesn’t.

There’s been three golden opportunities to beat Liverpool since he’s been back as they’ve been shocking in all three games. Dyche is a much worse manager but when the opportunity was there for a win against them because they were terrible he took it. I don’t think Moyes thinks we deserve to beat them, so we don’t.

The same behaviour has been seen against all the other top teams. We were terrible under Dyche as times with really terrible players yet when it was our day we beat Chelsea Newcastle Liverpool Arsenal, we were extremely poor under Lampard but when push came to shove we beat United Chelsea Leicester Newcastle. This season with better players we’ve lost all of them (except United) with only one goal scored.

I just don’t think Moyes thinks we should be beating those teams. He looks at the squad, thinks it’s ranked in the bottom half, top half would be an achievement, we’re not good enough for anything else, we’ll lose these games to these certain teams, we should win these games against these teams, get a few draws from the remaining fixtures and there’s your 10th place. We’re not good enough for a trophy either.

He’s not wrong, it’s just not an enjoyable way to follow a football team. Even the unpredictability of being terrible has gone. Perhaps everyone just needs to accept it’s two functional seasons of just moving from lower bottom half to top ten and perhaps some of the fume would die down.

I just think most people can see there’s been opportunities there this season. Opportunity to go further in the league cup opportunity for an away derby win, opportunity to be much higher in the league, opportunity to get off to a good start. The opportunity for an away win at United was taken (just about!) but all the rest been passed up for no real reason other than Everton just implode don themself and threw in performances that are miles away from what we’re capable of.

This was his response to Europe after the Forest win:

"I'm too old now to say we just want to avoid relegation, but I'm not daft enough to say Europe is possible. I don't think we are quite ready, but we will keep knocking at the door."

Everything is done to limit expectation.

"It will get much harder to make a bigger step in the next years, it might be that we can only get ninth or we can only get eighth."

Oh, throw a cup in there, Davey, and we'll forgive eighth or ninth for a while. Play Mark Travers tomorrow and you can sling your hook.

He's a hard man to like, isn't he. A real Debbie Downer as Courtney Barnett would say.
