2025/26 David Moyes

my main concern is the frailty of the side if we lose a couple of goals at home

i wrote off spurs as an anomaly and newcastle as being physically outmatched

three heavy defeats at home, all to opposition who were below us in the table and with poor away records are not isolated incidents, there seems to be a frailty there which you would not associate with a Moyes side

This is not anomaly but a clear trend underlying existing squad weakness and manager inadequacy…

The thing that baffles me is how generally solid we are at the back when we're away, but as soon as we try to be a bit more open at home, we fall apart, particularly at set pieces, which is not something usually associated with a Moyes team.

There’s fundamentally not enough pace in midfield and defence. That’s why when a team gets on top of us it’s very difficult to wrestle the initiative back. It’s not helped by the 4231 formation isolating the 10 and leaving essentially 2 in midfield.

We need to play 433, we need to get Rohl’s pace in the midfield somewhere, and we need to get Branthwaite and OBrien as the starting pairing.

Although he generally had good overall defensive records Moyes certainly wasn't immune to the occasional hammering in his first spell, but probably more pertinently it was definitely a big problem he had at West Ham. Obviously the way things have ended up going for them I'm sure a lot of their fans regret wanting him out but at the time it was kind of understandable to an extent, they conceded 3 or more 16 times in his last 15 months there, and 5 or more 6 times.

Our fullbacks are preventing this. Without the width of an attacking fullback, the wingers are forced to stay wide, and the 10 is needed to utilise the space between midfield and attack. A couple of attacking fullbacks would transform the team, it's baffling why it hasn’t happened.

I don't really disagree with the basic premise but that doesn't really explain the bad results because that isn't how most of the problems have come about in those games. We've conceded from set pieces in all of them, we could have all the pace in the world and it wouldn't make any difference if every time a half decent corner came in we gave someone a free header.

Agree with a lot of the responses

I think as well one factor does have to be players

Fans have lauded Keane this year but he is way past whatever level his best was in 2017 and is not up to standard. Mykolenko is also poor and whilst Tarkowski has been solid since he came in he’s still a bottom half defender

O’Brien has quality but gets found wanting at rb

And ye whilst garner and gana are good players they can be too easy to play through at times

I guess we all thought we were beyond pastings especially with a shiny new stadium but maybe we’re not quite there yet

Yeah set pieces are a big issue that need fixing.

Separate to this though, I feel like we need to play very well to get results because fundamentally we’re second to most balls and we struggle to close the gaps between defence and midfield. The lack of pace at the back means the backline sit deeper which increases the gap to the midfielders so they then drop back and before you know it it’s the classic Everton formation of two blokes jogging around chasing shadows 30 yards in front of two banks of 4.

If we had a quicker backline we could play higher up the pitch, push the midfield further forwards and all the gaps would be easier to close. We’d be much more competitive and not so easily overran.

It would need Branthwaite and JOB coming in and two new fullbacks though.

League table with the scab 6 removed.

Inferiority complex confirmed

I think fans remember his defences at Everton and not those at Sunderland or West Ham.

Obviously, as you say the defence he put together at West Ham was a sieve and frequently conceded 3, 4 and even 5 goals.

An absolute mess and this is why their fans wanted him out. Who wants to watch their team getting smashed.
