Cycling thread

It was obvious it was going to happen. The UCI have turned it into a sham with the Froome verdict and the fact it was done days before it started. I amazed someone hasn't done him properly. He shouldn't have been in the race. Only Sky and the UCI wanted him there.

And why wasn't Nibali given the same time as the rest? He hit a motor bike... pretty sure Froome was given the same time 2 years ago for similar

The UCI are to blame in releasing their verdict so late in the day - that was ridiculous, they must have and did know well in advance.

Without doubt the real person to blame is the idiot who months ago leaked what was meant to be completely confidential. Froome was using a controlled substance in salbutamol and was within expected limits considering 20 tests each after different stages taken with 19 clear and the other within expected limits. These test conditions are quite obviously impossible to replicate without racing the Vuelta all over again

Froome had every right to race without all the social media inspired fury inflamed by a partisan press and sponsors who like playing to the gallery instead of being remotely responsible.

Only after they changed the limit for the Alien

Wada had access to information that the UCI does not, including ongoing and unpublished studies on the excretion of Salbutamol (which is - as confirmed by Wada Scientific Director - subject to considerable variations)

They are the leading experts on the variations to be expected under such conditions.

Only scientists who have this expertise should set limits.

The first thing to understand is that this was never a case, It was a process to determine whether they should bring a case. And 99% of the time that happens behind closed doors, in complete privacy.

In this case, it was public, which is really unfortunate and whoever leaked it — because somebody inside the UCI leaked it — it’s just nasty, vindictive behaviour to do that, It doesn’t actually allow the system to work in the way that it should in a case involving a restricted substance, as opposed to a banned substance.

A controlled pharmacokinetic study, was not insisted on by Wada in Froome’s case because it is completely impossible to replicate the circumstances.

I don’t know how you would replicate that in cycling I think it’s almost impossible.

so why have other cyclists been banned for being over the Salbutamol limit? Surely they couldn't replicate it?

If a test is unreliable as the scientists now say is the case and has been used in the past to ban other cyclists, then the now known about unreliability renders their bans as incorrectly and wrongly given

To then say a test that has proved unreliable and been incorrectly used to ban cyclists in the past should nevertheless be used to ban cyclists now and in the future is just absolutely senseless, laughable even.

Two wrongs don't make a right

If the scientists maintain that a high degree of variability is to be expected then they have far more expertise to determine such a fact than you or me.

The test is no longer fit for purpose and regardless of past mistakes shouldn't be used.

Really ruined the tour for me with Nibali being forced out, and by a camera strap from the spectator, another lucky break for team murdoch.

I thought Nibali was looking strong enough to challenge, and as my favourite rider that's a gut punch, herculean effort from the great man to get back within 13 seconds, but after he gave up the giro to prepare for the tdf that is a real sickener

The video is grim. He has clearly broke something in his back, how he managed to carry on is a miracle. He wouldn't have challenged for the win though. Sky are playing at the minute. Last thing they want is Froome in yellow with the mood in France.

All geared up for Thomas to keep the yellow and then suddenly have a terrible day towards the end of the 3rd week and Froome will take yellow.

I hate the way Thomas spoke after the race, he's 32 and put in huge work for the murdoch team, just race lad and if brailsford and froome don't let you call them right out on it.

Nibali was an outside shot for sure against the money team, but he wouldn't have died wondering, absolutely gutted he is out
