Kinda 1-2% uphill all the way isn't it? Dead straight road along the valley too. I've only done Luz Ardiden twice but both times it was kind of a bolt on to other climbs that day just because it's there, and as a result it was a real struggle both times. Blooming ugly ski hut thing at the top as well, which vies for Le Mongie in terms of its concrete monstrosity'ness.
Very true. La Mongie, blot on the landscape.

Pity about that hotel raid in Pau.

Today's stage is war of attrition. Its uphill from thee start to the top of the Tourmalet.
From Bagnoles to St Mary long long drag.
I was tired out before I got onto the Tourmalet many years ago when I was able to do such things.
Tourmalet is one of the few big cols I've done in Europe - My Gosh is it a massive climb. Never steep, though, so that is a small mercy.

I did a ten mile TT last night and was off before a pro rider called Ryan Mullen, Irish TT champ and rides for Trek Segafredo - pretty cool to see what 430W for 20 mins looks like in reality (ie not on zwift!). Just a local club ten but he must be training in the area as he'd turned out for a few recently. I held him off for 3 and a half miles before he passed me, which was a reasonable effort I thought - he smashed the course record with a short 19, which is crazy fast for a slow course.

Seen the clips of Cav throwing his toys out of the pram. Not happy with the front end set up of his bike it seems.
Shows the stress and pressure these guys are under, even before the racing starts.
But don't most people get nervous before the start of a event.
Even a club 10.

The roads are so bloody smooth and barely any traffic. It’s a dream.

Off to Girona on Sunday but not sure I’ll get to ride.
Yes, it is nice, and the hills are very doable. Nothing extremely long or steep. I found the coast road along the Costa Brava very pretty, and as you say, great road surfaces with very little traffic. Wouldn't mind having a long weekend out there if the travel situation improves by autumn.

Yeah nothing more than 6 percent. Only the heat makes it challenging!

I was hoping more places would go green so it would be easy to escape but looks the opposite now!

Wout looked awesome today - buried himself for that. He'll have mega legs of the Olympic TT but the parcours may not be quite up his street - it's punchy with 423 m of ascent over 44km.

Imagine he'll go off favourite as the strongest man in the road race (on the strongest team) but that brings its own challenges - the whole field will be racing against him.

Austrian ultra endurance rider Christoph Strasser broke the 24 hr record at the weekend. 1036km = 26.5mph average (for a DAY!) on 4.5 mile laps of an airfield, in the rain = Jedi.

Any advice re: bike racks for a vehicle? I've been told to steer away from roof racks, which work fine until you crunch everything accidentally then you regret your entire life. So it's likely a hitch mounted rack for me. I've also been told the sort that support the wheels are better than those that support the frame simply because you're likely to damage your frame at some point. And I've used Thule before so this is my benchmark, been very happy with their products I just try to forget what I pay for Thule. So, any tips on what sort of bike racks make sense (would like 2 bike rack ideally, but some hanging racks fit 4 easily).

Tow bar (ie hitch in your dialect) rack is best, just that most vehicles don't come with a tow bar so it's also the biggest outlay if you need one fitted.

I've had both types of towbar rack you describe and the lower ones that the bike stands in are the best - they're the most stable for the bike, bikes stay in place, number plate and lights are integrated into the rack. They're also far more expensive than the other type that you hang your bikes off (last I checked). I have this type now and it is fine, but the bikes do move around more so there is risk of cosmetic damage with two rubbing together. Plus you need to hang a number board off the back somehow - it's not as clean and tidy a solution.

I think you're right that you just need to forget about the expense if you know you're going to be transporting the bikes a lot - it's essential to be able to do this safely and with the least amount of hassle possible. If it's something you're only going to be doing now and again you're prob best looking at a detachable boot rack (clips onto the back of the car), you can get some pretty good ones now for not much outlay.
